After about a year of random/vague 50th anniversary stuff surrounding the group (virtually none pertaining to the Brian, and best, era), tomorrow sees a proper Stones 50th anniversary - namely, the British release of their first single, 'Come On'/'I Want To Be Loved'.
Presumably because there is a higher mark up on T-shirt sales (£20?)/baseball hats (£20?)/ticket sales (£300?), there doesn't seem to be any tie-in release for this 'proper' anniversary; a pity because I'm going into London tomorrow.
Why don't record companies actually sell records any more, or have I answered my own question?

Is the early stuff still administered by ABKCO? I'm not sure that they've been much interested in the quality of the art as much as maximizing sales. And if 'Come On' isn't guaranteed to become a blockbuster smash hit, they won't issue it. Even for the fans.

Yep, the deadening hand of ABKCO is almost certainly somewhere in the mix. The same deadening hand that prohibits the availability of the group's first two British LPs.
The very last thing that I would want, or would take part in, is the kind of eBay frenzy over a limited release, but those Elvis re-issues from 2005 were limited to 22,500 copies each, and the first two effortlessly got to number one.....until the record industry (conspiracy theory alert - only this one's true!) started manipulating the situation to stop them effortlessly getting to number one.
