I gotta say. Mono was originally mixed with bad sound systems and AM radio in mind, which the majority of fans had. Stereo was mixed for grownups or the few audiophiles there were. Mono still sounds good on 'modern' systems, i.e. the force and power of the 'in your face' center speaker mix. But with a few exceptions. I like hearing the stereo records with the space inherent in a stereo mix.

Whilst that may have been true for classical music, it wasn't true of The Beatles recordings or for a lot of other EMI acts for that matter, where up until around 1968 the stereo versions were literally thrown together at the last minute - it was actually treated as a bit of a fad! Of course The Beatles would often attend the mono mixing sessions too, a hell of a lot more time was lavished upon those mixes. I think it has a lot more to do with luck and the skill of the Abbey Road engineers that the vast majority of the Beatles' stereo mixes actually turned out OK!

Amadeus: "Mono was originally mixed with bad sound systems and AM radio in mind, which the majority of fans had."
I had not heard that. I knew that mono singles were equalized for cheap players and AM, but I did not know they had also mixed them that way too.

Um...I don't mean they used bad equipment and mixed them bad etc,,, I just meant that because the majority of folks who listened to that kind of music listened over a certain quality of sound system which in a lot of cases was dire. So, you mix it with ONE speaker in mind and Kite's your uncle. But eventually, 'stereo' players/systems became more and more the norm. So,,,stereo became more important. Gotta make it sound good for the new systems. I suppose that's why the stereo mix of Abbey Road sounds more full than, say, Help!.
It wasn't necessary to mix 'Dark Side Of The Moon' in mono you see. Just in the ill fated quad format and old fashioned stereo.

I've just been listening to Five (5) versions of the HELP! album and here's what I've found.
The (1) 1965 stereo mix was improved on (2) the 1986 re-mix by dragging some of the hard left and hard right a little closer to the middle which made it sound fuller. The (3) mono version is excellent of course. The (4) US stereo version included a couple of mono tunes faked into duo-phonic stereo rather than waiting for the proper stereo mix to come over from EMI. And the (5) mono US HELP! album was merely a fold-down of the stereo including a fold down of the 'fake' stereo track. I guess they couldn't wait for the proper mono mixes?
I don't know why I brought it up but one could go insane checking on all the variations around the world. Three mono 'Revolver' tracks were rushed over to the US for the 'Yesterday and Today' album. Soooo,,,the three 'Revolver' tracks were again duo-phonicked and again the mono album was folded down from the stereo. yada yada yada.

It's very funny listening to 'Yesterday and Today'. Songs from three different albums plus a single. Three different mixing styles all clashing.

In regards to The Beatles albums I can understand a mono preference... Mono is not in anyway an industry standard in 2014... Producers will laugh at u if u want to record in 'mono' Sorry...

I prefer Stereo, but some songs do sound better in mono (to me). I can't believe Helter Skelter in mono "does not" include the famous Ringo screaming "I've Got Blisters On MY Fingers" tacked on the end of it! I own the original UK Parlophone LP's in mono, because that's just the historical way to do it properly, since that is the way George & the boys mixed it, but for the UK Apple LP's, I went with Stereo, as only the White LP had both options. Maybe some day I'll pick up a White mono LP. But really, I prefer the 2009 stereo CD set for it's clarity. I don't mind listening to the 2009 mono set, but to me, it's just not as exciting. Other than that I own the 3 unique Capitol Canadian LPs, & Canadian Capitol Magical Mystery Tour, ('cause I'm Canadian, eh?), but really don't care for what Capitol did to the original LP's & Songs 1963 November.....................1964 February......................1964 June! As much as I would agree with you, Beatle fans can't wait for the new 2014 mono release coming out in September!

If only they'd released that 3rd Capitol boxset!! Tad annoying they didn't finish that project! Agreed. I owned those 2 sets and had to buy Russian bootlegs of "Yesterday & Today" and the "Hey Jude" albums to complete the sets, but once I put them in iTunes, I gladly sold them all off. Even sold off the 2012 stereo LP set to pay for my Original UK LP's. Probably just in time since the new mono LP set is remixed in analog, so people will want the stereo set re-remixed in analog too, making these worthless to most!

Yesterday and Today is now available on CD in the US. I know because I purchased a copy. My wife hated the butcher cover and peeled and stuck the included trunk cover over it.
So, with Y&T available, we don't really need a third box set, since American Capitol Revolver is identical to British Parlophone Revolver, except the Capitol version has three fewer songs. These three songs appear on Y&T. So, if you get Y&T and British Revolver, you have the equivalent of the 3rd boxed set but with some redundancy.
Besides, the two boxed sets have 4 albums each, 4 for 1964 and 4 for 1965. There were only 2 Capitol albums released by the Beatles in 1966.
Oh, and the United Artists release of A Hard Day's Night, with the top halves of the Beatles' faces, is also now available on CD. So, if you have an urge to once again hear "Ringo's Theme" or the jazz-waltz version of the title song, it's there.

The most important point you are missing is, this new 2014 US box set is just taken from the 2009 UK mixes, and do not carry the true reverb sound of the Capitol recordings. That was the whole point of those Capitol box sets! A 3rd box set would have had the Capitol reverb that the other 2 sets had, that this new release does not! They could include the US Hey Jude album too! This is how N.A. heard the Beatles! www.thebeatlesrarity.com/2012/07/19/asknat-concerning-another-capitol-albums-box-set/
