Ray Manzarek, keyboard player with The Doors died today (21 May 2013). Most people, when they hear about The Doors, think about Jim Morrison. However, Manzarek was the driving force behind the band. Uniquely, he was the bass player, using a 'keyboard bass' technique.
Strangely (and spookily) enough, I purchased the DVD 'The Doors' yesterday! The Oliver Stone one with Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison. I think The Doors were the kind of band that you either liked or 'didn't like'.
R.I.P. Ray. He was 74.

Sad news indeed. His influence can be heard in many great keyboard players. One of the most original and innovative players ever.
He was only the 'bass player' live. They used session bass players in the studio. The image of the four of them on stage was an iconic one. The Doors, and Ray, will never be forgotten.

I had tickets to go see them on March 22, 1969. Too bad good old Jim pulled his pants down on March 1st and all their later shows were canceled.
