The Rutles was a brilliant film in my opinion. Very well thought out and comically twisted. Almost every scene reflected true Beatles history albeit changed for comic effect but you can tell the basis of the story. One scene that doesn't make sense is when Barry gets married (or doesn't) and all sorts of people are swapping places with the bride and groom. While all this is going on Living In Hope is playing and Eric Idle says about Barry's wedding day 'inspiring his haunting ballad When You Find The Girl of Your Dreams in the arms of some Scotsmen from Hull'.
It may not refer to anything but given this scene had so much screen time and every other scene in the film referenced an actual Beatle related event, it must have some relevance.

The Rutles is indeed a funny parody of Beatle life. Wouldn't say it was a brilliant though. But movie tastes are so subjective. Went to see Neil Innes a few years ago.He was great, but As for the songs I just don't get it.Of course Expertly Arranged & played & funny to boot.just not my cup of tea.Could never subject my self to an album listen. Just my humble opinion

I love the film. At the time, George Harrison said it was the most accurate portrayal of the Beatles story yet. But you can tell it's a Eric Idle solo project. Wouldn't it have been perfect if it was a Monty Python written project?
I think it was the trousers.

The music aside, it clearly is an Eric Idle project. However Neil Innes's performance is tremendous. 'We've thought it over, Chastity and myself.....' Barring Idle's interviewer performance Neil's performance is the stand out performance.
Cheese and Onion is probably the most original song in the film and the best clearly. Lets Be Natural is also one of the best albeit Dear Prudence meets Happiness Is A Warm Gun.
Whatever people's views on the film it was clearly inspirational. I'm sure messrs Reiner, McKean, Guest and Shearer used this as a blueprint of sorts.

Didn't Barry spend a year in bed for tax purposes?

Just read the first post in this thread, mrmustard, about Barry's wedding and people swapping places with the bride and groom. Could be an allusion to Maureen having an affair with George in the early 70's and Patti ending up with Eric Clapton (George's husband-in-law!). As far as I recollect from somewhere or other George actually suggested swapping wives with Ringo at the time.

That's a thought Wilf. You're right, George did suggest swapping wives before coaxing Maureen into bed!

My review of Archaeology. Enjoyable but not near as much as the original album. Why? The songs sound forced. And the technology is too modern and clean sounding.
The first album is fresh and enthusiastic sounding. It was probably good as a one off joke. It stands alone. Musn't be touched. Sort of like if The Beatles or Led Zeppelin made a new album right now. It would be a bit anti-climactic, no?
It's like trying to re-capture the runaway success of the chicken and the road joke. It doesn't need a sequel. It would take away from the original.
Refute!

I think the original Archaeology CD has 3 (or 4) original demo songs that were originally intended for the original film ("We've Arrived", "Unfinished Words", "Now She's Left You") - these were very interesting to hear, especially "Unfinished Words" which contains lyrical references to some of George Harrison's unused song titles (for example "Pink Litmus Paper Shirt"). Of the remaining new tracks, some are very good ("Questionnaire", "Hey Mister", "Joe Public" and "Shangri La") whilst others are not (here I'm thinking of "Rendezvous", "Easy Listening" and "Back in '64"). What should be noted is that some of the new tracks on this album were old Neil Innes songs that were Beatlefied up for the Rutles "reunion". I was lucky enough to see The Rutles play Beatle Week on their reunion tour and it was a bloody good show (anyone else see it?)! In the end I think Archaeology does nothing to damage the legacy of the Rutles - what it does do is further showcase the brilliance of Neil Innes, which can't be a bad thing!

"Archeology" is mostly boring to me, but the first Rutles album is a treat I return to several times a year. I recall hearing an interview with Eric Idle & Neil Innes who talked about how George Harrison helped with the project by telling them how The Beatles achieved certain sounds...
"Piggy In The Middle" is a brilliant parody of "I Am The Walrus". It's my favorite track on the CD. "Archeology" is a tedious listen. I tried many times, but I can't make it even a third of the way through.

I love both The Rutles album and film. Recently watched it with my wife (who'd never seen it before) and she loved it. The major problem, we had to watch a German subtitled version on youtube because I absolutely cannot find a DVD release that will play in the US. Actually bought a French release off amazon thinking it might be internationally coded for Canada and North America but no such luck. Anyway, the musical parodies are brilliant and I like how some of them seem to reference a combination of multiple Beatle songs in each one. Ouch! and Piggy in the Middle are a couple of my all time fave songs, let alone my fave Rutles songs! As far as Archaeology goes, I look at it like the 2nd Spinal Tap album, some amusing moments but a case of going back to the well one time too many

The film itself is a must for dedicated Beatles fans , the music is wonderful, it's great to work out what they're parodying . You have to be a real Beatles fan to get all the references .

Stig is dead.
Barry is also dead. No wait, that was just a tax dodge.
