This was my 6th Beatle week (previous 96,99,00,02, 06,12) and I have to say the best and most fun of the whole lot! It was a pleasure to meet some fellow forum members and get to know some of you a little as the weekend went on The bands were fantastic. Highlights for me were 'The Cavern Club Beatles' in the Philharmonic Hall on the Monday evening , followed by 'Pepperland' who were also great. The Otro Purto Orchestra from Brazil were amazing...I hear them twice in the philharmonic and the most memorable in the adelphi ballroom at 12 midday on the Sunday, standing right beside them playing amazing versions of Let It Be, Come Together and With A little Help From My Friends...I hope they come back next year! Started out by going into the Cavern Pub midday Saturday. The Starclubbers were playing also very good, followed by beatle week dinosaur Hal Blaine. Later that day went down to the Carvern itself and seen Mike Dunne who is from Dublin, he was ok not my favourite I have to say. As usual I could only handle 60 minutes in the place, before, due to profuse sweating, etc., need to escape! I went to the Philharmonic Hall on Sat night. AN old fav of mine Gary Gibson (when I went in 1996 he was the first act I ever seen at Bealtes week down in the Carvern Club and he knocked me out) who is still brilliant. He was followed by Working Class Hero who were also good. Other good bands I seen were the Chocking Smokers, Help! (from Mexico this band played the whole Abbey Road medley brilliantly!) , Just Beatles, Revolver, Ringer and the Club Big Bealtes (love that they place so much white album stuff and are just fun to watch). Bands that werent my cup of tea were 'The Liverpool Boys', I think the lead singer thinks he a cross between Axl Rose and Bon Jovi! But its all subjective I guess. Also some of the Japanaese bands are fun to watch by not my favourite musically. Attempted the 'Adephi all nighter' but ran out of steam at about 3am when every cell in my body was telling me to go to bed. Besides, at that stage every band was starting to sound the same and it becomes a point of beatle music overdose! I am sure other beatle week goers are familiar with that feeling ? ! Hope to come back next year all going well!!

Was great to meet up with meet up with you over the weekend.
I agree there were some fantastic performances this year especially at the Philharmonic Hall.
Pity the Mathews Street Festival was called off at the last minute still you can't have everything.
Hope next year will be just as entertaining.

Hi Trev. Pleasure to meet you and your Mum. One question though; Who is Hal Blaine?? Hal Blaine was a session drummer in the Sixties (for Phil Spector I think) but is famous for playing on the Beach Boys tracks (Pet Sounds?) AND on the the "Hear The Beatles Tell All" album, in which he plays drums over the John Lennon's interview with Jim Steck (?) (I really should research this reply but am too tired!!! LOL Anyway, was wonderful to meet you Trev and great to have Rob back posting with us!

One of my favourite years too. Great to meet up with so many forum members old and new. Also Martin and Mathew from Germany.
Favourite bands this year - Hocus Pocus, Them Beatles, Choking Smokers, Tripper, Brothel Creepers. Enjoyed Hal Bruce very much this year too.
The talks on convention day where really good too. The Andy Peebles interview was particularly exceptional but marred by the inept organisation of Cavern City Tours (I'll keep it positive here then go for the jugular on another thread). Peebles really connected with the audience. The emotion was staggering.
I loved the Lewisohn interview too. I particularly liked the way he berrated Iris Caldwell which was completely appropriate and called for with the crap she was spouting in her interview. Even more interesting for the fact Lewisohn was interviewing Iris and he in turn was interviewed by Spencer Leigh. Plus the fact you just don't expect Lewisohn to be so blunt and attacking about someone in that way.
Can't wait for next year!

Thanks for that Al. When he was described as a 'Beatle Week dinasour', I presumed Trev meant Hal Bruce. Now you mention him, I have heard of him but didn't realise he was a regular at Beatle Week.

Have to agree about Andy Peebles, that had to be the best interview I'd ever heard in there, it was also the quietest I'd ever heard teh ballroom during an interview; you could have heard the proverbial pin drop. Although he's bitter about teh BBC (who isn't?), it was great to hear his stories surrounding the Lennon interview, and the fact that he spoke with so much passion was great to hear. I'm glad that he chose Liverpool to speak about the interview for the first time. A huge thank you should go out to Jean Catharell for talking him into appearing.
Gleison Tullio and The Tearaways were also excellent in Waves on the Saturday evening. Hocus Pocus on the Sunday night, and Gerry Marsden on Tuesday were also highlights for me.

Highlights for me this year were Them Beatles, The Tearaways, The Sutcliffes. Some new bands were good too and show promise for upcoming years, in particular Johnny and the Moondogs. I really liked Afterbeat, didnt think i would but actually were very good. Not playing the usual hits but b sides and album tracks.
I only went to one show at the Phil, despite having the package. I dont think i will be booking the CCT packages again as i rarely enjoy the Phil. These shows would be great in the Adelphi or even somewhere else where you have the option of standing.
The Overtures in the Adelphi on Monday was fantastic - a welcome return for them. Ive not went to the Phil to see them in previous years.
The All nighter for me was a bit of a hit and a miss - some good bands but terrible organisation and seating arrangements. One of the rooms was so bright you had to squint your eyes when you went in, and there was no dancing area at the front. If you fancied a dance you had a to be right at the back where you couldnt see the band!
Anyway it was another great week, a bit sad that its over again, looking forward to 2013 already!

Hi all Really enjoyed B/w 2012 even though only made it to two days fri & sun.highlights for me were brothel creepers ,Hocus Pocus , Clube big Beatles entertaining as ever, Hal Bruce who done a fab version of Dear Prudence. Alma de Cuba was a cool venue on Fri indoors & on the patio. Great company ,mrmustard , the end to name but a few. It was hard keeping up with you guys me being a light drinker. I've been coming to Sun convention day for 14yrs now.It has me wondering is the class of bands going down. Maybe a question for mrmustard & the end who have A comprehensive overview regarding seeing every band during the week. Are we seeing the cream of the bands of B/Week on the main stage on the Sunday? I remember the days when we had bands like Ringer, bob bartey,Instant Karma,Fab faux & many others. The tearaways apparently did a set without doing a Beatles track. Beatles convention day & not doing the Beatles Missing the point me thinks. I left Sunday with the interviews being the highlight rather than the bands. Like to know what people think. Still love it bring on 2013 B/w Peace to all

I'm not jumping on the attack but I just don't understand the love affair between Beatles fans and The Tearaways. Yes, they are technically good players, but come on. It's about The Beatles, not a setlist filled with 60's songs.

The Tearaways more often than not do sets without any Beatle tunes. Apart from the fact it's good to have a break from the fabs, the atmosphere at the Tearways gigs, along with the attitude of the band, the genuine fun they have on stage that makes its way into the audience, simply makes it a great time for all!
I'm hoping I won't get flamed for saying that, but it is great to have a change sometimes. I think that's also the reason that The Overtures go down so well when they play?

it eliviates the Beatle overload when you get bands that play something else.
it places it in context of who influenced and was influenced by
and if need be go in another room and watch a pure Beatle band.
by the end of the week even the Hamburg track Soldier of Love made me groan (four bands back to back in the cavern front all played it on Tues and a fair few had done it over the week)

Hmm..band that chews gum on stage, wears shades, posing. Not playing Beatles..hmm they really must be thinking 'let's give them a rest of Beatles music'. Or it could be they're trying to say something else..

They're from California, it's compulsory to wear shades!
As Alix said, the good thing about BW is that if you don't like a particular band, go into another room and watch someone else!

I always disappear when The Tearaways come on. Give me Beatles or solo material. It's a Beatles related convo, not a Tearaways one. Just gimme some truth.
