Now this is something I've been dying to hear for years as I always wanted to know what The Beatles brought to their version of How Do You Do It. There was only a brief tantalising clip of it in Anthology and having now heard it in full, I think it now demonstrates how much of an improvement their's was over the Mitch Murray demo version. It also shows that Gerry and the Pacemakers copied The Beatles' arrangement of the song.
Really must try and download this series!!

Surely George Martin was impressed with their interpretation of this? How could he not be. Ok, you can hear the reluctance in the voices about wanting to do it but you also hear a great harmony lead vocal and a really punchy, energetic interpretation that takes the original version to another level much in the same way as many other covers they did.
It would be really interesting to know if George Martin actually played the original demo to Gerry and the Pacemakers or just gave them the Beatles version. I suspect the latter and they probably never even heard the original demo as their version is too much like The Beatles version in terms of arrangement.
You defintely should try and download this series if you can. The final part is today, Sunday afternoon. Spencer Leigh is an exceptional broadcaster and writer. His books would take pride of place in any Beatles biography collection.

Did anyone manage to get it downloaded? Would love to hear it and it appears it's no longer available online.

No, I tried every trick I knew to download the show but in the end the only way I could see to record the show would have been to put a mic up to the speaker!! Very annoying!
Hopefully it will be repeated and someone more technologically savvy will share it with us!

I done a bit of research on this and you can apparantly download some software to record/download BBC Iplayer shows to your PC. Well only one person mentioned this but in general you can't record/download from it.
I know for definite the series is being repeated at Christmas. If it comes on any sooner I will let you know the dates and the Christmas dates when they are out.

Get the iplayer software download Al! The Beatles from Mathew street to Abbey road is being repeated on Christmas Eve, New Years Eve and New Years Day all at 9pm on BBC Radio Merseyside (the three parts over the three nights).
This is a highly recommended documentary. Al, when you get the iplayer software downloaded and working, please let me know where you downloaded it from!!

Oh God - not sure how near a computer I'm gonna be on those days - bad time of year (in a good way!)!! But if anyone has a Virgin cable box in the Merseyside area they could record it the same as they would any TV show. If I do manage to download it, it would be using Mac software but I'll let you know - I will start the research tonight!

Here it is, the original demo version of How Do You Do It: [music]http://www.the-end-uk.com/HowDoYouDoIt.mp3[/music] It's not great quality so if anyone can do a better capture, it's still here for the next couple of days (about 36:15 into the broadcast): www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/p0123s4t?t=278.058
