Just how important do you think Geoff Emerick's role was in creating the Beatles' studio sound? In his own words his role appears to have been immense.

It's important but I think Emerick has a tendency to overstate his importance himself especially in his book Here There and Everywhere. Every Beatles song would have still been written and arranged exactly the same if Emerick wasn't their engineer. The same cannot be said for George Martin who directly influenced the finished song.
I'm not trying to do Emerick down as he is a brilliant engineer. He pioneered recording techniques that are still used today and that's important. I'm more trying to get him in the perspective within the bigger picture of The Beatles.
He was a great engineer but The Beatles would still be as big today if he hadn't been their engineer.

From what I’ve read it was the Beatles that would come to him and ask him if it could be done a certain way and he made it happen. I think if it wasn’t him, someone else would have gladly listened to their ideas!
