Hello Forum--
Since the release of the 09 Remasters, I have come to notice certain very irritating engineering/ production abnormalities( defects) on a few Beatle( and a couple other) tracks. The nature of these defects almost always involves an instrument that is to overbearing or even distorting at some point in the record.
I resolved to correct these defects by creating a new remaster/ edit of each one. This was done by recording the CD onto my AIWA AD-R707 cassette deck and modulating the input Vol levels( and in a couple of cases the input Bal) very smoothly at the point of the defect.
The AD-R707 may be the best deck on the market( very rare as I have never even seen one on Ebay). It has AMTS( which really locks the tape into place), Bias fine adjust and also HX Pro. Add to that a TDK HX-S Pro tape( very rare in and of itself) and I doubt anyone will be able to detect a generation loss. If I am able to mass transfer these new versions onto CD, I plan to make them available to all( for a reasonable price).
This has been a monumental task that has taken 2 years and many hundreds of hours of time. It has been worth it though as I believe these new remaster/edits are the most advanced versions on the planet.
The songs fall into 2 catagories-- the easy ones and the hard ones.
The easy ones first
1: Help-- This has been prematurely faded out to avoid John's voice failing at the end. .
2: I Saw Her Standing There-- George's solo really blasts out. I have faded it down and then back up at end of solo.
3: Back In USSR-- George's solo has again been faded down and then up. The end has also been faded out early B4 Prudence begins.
4: Old Brown Shoe. The guitar solo on this has been faded down a bit and then segued back up. The end also has been faded.
5: Let It Be-- To give Georges first lick more presence, I have altered the Bal slightly at that point for a couple of seconds. There is also a Vol surge near the end of this record that has been remedied.
6: Money-- As the mid 8 really blasts out, this track has been faded down slightly and then back up B4 the vocals begin again.
7: In My Life-- the harpsicord solo is very overbearing and has been faded down and then up when it is over
Two non Beatle songs are included in the easy catagory. Chuck Berry's Never Can Tell and The Searchers Love Potion # 9. Both of these have had their mid 8's faded down a bit and then back up. Never Can tell has been faded down at the end as well as the Piano blasts out there like it does in the Middle.
Now the hard ones.
1: Savoy Truffle-- The fade in of this is very awkward and it has been altered to provide a more even Vol level. The guitar solo has again been faded down slightly and then back up.
2: Baby Its U-- One of the most difficult. The Vol levels have been fade up and down in 4 or 5 different places-- including the mid 8.
3: I Me Mine-- Another very difficult task. The Mid 8 really blasts and has been faded down slightly and then back up. There is also a noticeable Vol surge in the second A section that has been remedied. A fade in of the Mid 8 has been added to make the track 2 1/2 mins. I believe this has been done B4 but only with the Spector version.
4: Martha-- Similar to Savoy Truffle the fade in Vol level on this track is awkward and has been adjusted. I also altered the Bal input slightly during the Fr Horn solo( does anyone know who plays this?)
5: Mean Mr Mustard/ Poly Pam-- notice the bass overload at the point of seague from Mean to Poly. This has been corrected and Vol level altered slightly in a couple other places. Georges solo has again been faded and the entire track has been faded out to make it end B4 Bathroom begins.
6: Something-- the Grandaddy of them all. This record really is engineered very poorly. Paul's Bass( does anyone know if this is the Rick or the Hofner?) distorts going into the mid 8 and the mid 8 itself is a big mess. The bass also overloads near the end and this has been corrected. I spent about a hundred hours on this track alone.
I will try and make these new versions available ASAP. In the mean time, audiophile Beatles fans may want to give a listen to these songs as u already have them. See if U can detect the abnormalities that I hear.
Part of the reason for doing this is to prod EMI into noticing these defects and re-issuing the tracks as i have produced/ edited them. There are various ways this could be done. I will check back with the Forum when the Cd's are ready and they are offered for sale on Ebay.
