I think THE most obvious influence in a Beatles track is Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross", which CLEARLY is the same thing the Beatles did for "Sun King".
Albatross was a huge hit single in Britain (TV appearances etc) and it was very unusual style and idea. Simple but good. It's a beautiful feel and certainly became the inspiration for the Beatles to do Sun King...

Wow, reading your post I was thinking Fleetwood Mac nicked Sun King, but apparently the other way around I'd love to hear a clip of it, I'll scour youtube ... Thanks, Brian K! P.S. I might throw in another song that might be in the running for biggest "nick" FROM the Beatles ... how about "Lonely Days/Lonely Nights" from the Bee Gees?

Very, very influenced by The Beatles - but are you thinking of any one song in particular? To me it's a hybrid of a few Beatles songs. Here's a rendition to jog your memory :

Whilst there are vague similarities, I can't get my head around The Beatles doing the same 'thing' on Sun King though. Maybe this will confirm or otherwise?

Well, I think the harmonies are a bit off on this one. Sorry, just kidding. I do see a lot of similarity with the opening to Sun King, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if John had heard it and woke up one morning to write Sun King. One thing I've been reminded reading these threads is that there is really very little, to any**, music that isn't nicked in some fashion from something else. That clip from the guy who wrote the guitar riff that sounds pretty similar to "I Feel Fine" ... I actually think it sounds just about IDENTICAL to some Allman Brothers tune, not sure of the name but it has a line "Might be your man, I don't know", it's on the "Live at the Fillmore East (or was it West?)" album. I've actually not heard a song that "Yesterday" sounds like. Somebody wrote once that it was ripped from from a Ray Charles tune, but I remember looking up the tune and thinking it really wasn't all that close. I love threads like this -- you guys are great!! ** And actually, I haven't heard anything that sounds like Yoko's vocalizations, but to my ears that stuff is more like psychological warfare than like music. Yes - Yoko is clandestine CIA!!

Here's a rendition to jog your memory : You know, it seems like it should be so EASY to think of one, since it is so ... Beatle-y, but I can't think of a single specific song that it reminds me of. Bizarrely, the only one that comes to mind, despite my saying "Sacriliege, how can one have such a thought!" is A Day In the Life, the way it builds up to the C major from minor reminds me in some almost subliminal way of the build up to "Woke up ... got out of bed ...". Did you have a specific song in mind, arthurlee?

Did you have a specific song in mind, arthurlee? Please - call me Arthur No, not one specific song but in the intro before the main body of the song I can hear bits of 'I Am The Walrus' and 'Eleanor Rigby' But just for a few seconds at the very beginning, I can hear the intro to 'Love' from John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band. It's a remarkable song that conjures up all kinds of Beatles trademark hooks, chorus, harmonies, orchestration and production. I've always liked the song (released in 1970) but now I love it! Gonna put it on a 'Beatle-esque' compilation CD for the car.

This is taken from a forum discussing the language of the 'lyrics' and I have to say that you've both certainly heard something to link them both that I wouldn't even begin to think about. I guess it's a subtle, less obvious similarity to, say some Bee Gees or Fountains Of Wayne songs. Of course, the next time I hear Albatross I'll be thinking to myself "Did John really hear it and then (maybe subsconciously) be influenced enough to record Sun King?". Great stuff guys.

I cannot recall the quote, but I know that I have read that Lennon heard that riff and liked it so much that he wanted to try a lick like that. I'll try to find his quote.

OK - I've found a bit, but not the Lennon quote. On the FabFour FAQ site: "I've Seen That Road Before: Sources of Inspiration" mentions the link, but rather superficial and anecdotally. Check out this link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_King_%28song%29 . This is probably the best source on the issue.

Fleetwood mac made an album that i would consider there best album . The album i am talking about is Rumours and with that album was made some of the greatest songs ever written. Second hand news was such a great interest into an album. Stevie nicks is such a great singer and Mick fleetwood was such a good drummer. There is only two bands that had a better feeling in making a harmonic sound. The first one i am thinking about is the beach boys, and the number one group that i thought about was the one and the only group from liverpool that has made an iconic print in music and the world.
