Anyone else heard this story? Can any Liverpool residents shed any more light? (RTTNews) - A music festival paying tribute to the Beatles in their hometown of Liverpool, England may be called off next year due to drastic austerity measures throughout the U.K. Liverpool's annual Mathew Street Music Festival has become a haven for Beatles fans but may be axed this year due to its £900,000 annual price tag. Supporters of the festival argue that it brings an estimated £17 million into the area's economy. According to Liverpool City Council leader Joe Anderson, it's a special year to remember the Beatles, but the cost could be too high in this economy: "Next year is its 20th anniversary and it is also the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Beatles, with Ringo Starr joining as drummer," Anderson tells news sources. "But these are the difficult choices that we are having to make." The festival takes place along the city's Mathew Street, which was the home to the famed Cavern Club where the group played their first shows. This has been threatened every year for the last few years. It will never happen as the Mathew Street Festival generates too much income. There will be far too many Liverpool City Councilors missing out on bonuses, back handers and free holidays for it not to go ahead. The important thing to remember is that the Mathew Street Festival is independent of Beatleweek. There will always be a Beatleweek of some description even if the MSF is pulled - which it won't be.

Wish i was so confident as Mr mustard, we are talking about the city that thought it was a good idea to pull down the cavern Nick, it wasn't the city who pulled down the cavern it was the city council at the time. There's a big difference. The city where never asked their opinion. The council wanted to use it as part of ventilation shaft for the underground and weren't going to let a little club get in the way. They never did put the shaft in after demolishing the club which is even more of a kick in the teeth. Not many people cared about The Beatles in Liverpool in the Seventies therefore their brand name wouldn't generate much income. That situation is now turned on it's head. People flock to Liverpool and the city council make money out of them. As I said previously even if in the unlikely event the MSF is cancelled (which would make no difference to me) there will always be Beatleweek. The cavern club and pub aren't going to close and the Adelphi won't be pulled down.

Yep, sorry. When i said the city i meant the council. The 70's and early 80's were The Beatles lest popular time (the next generation always goes against the previous) but even with the wonderful thing we call hindsight it was a shameful decision

I completely agree with you. Shameful is not enough to describe this decision. Wouldn't you love the chance to ask the councillors involved what the hell they were thinking at the time. They dont even have the excuse of hindsight! The Beatles where the biggest thing ever to happen in Music and yet just three years after they break up they fill in the club in that made them and other bands synonymous with Liverpool. There is no justifiable excuse for this.

The age of the councilors at of the time, i would have thought they probably either went to the club as teaboys in the Beatles time or earlier in it's Jazz club days so should have had fond memories of it.
funny the power of money........

There is still a great day to be had in Liverpool . I used to get on a train to Liverpool just to walk down Mathew St. and look at the Lady Madonna statue . As thats all there was . And a trip on the Ferry ! Oh happy days

Hi
I need to write a paper for the university about the Beatle Week, but it appears to be hard to get the needed information on the Internet. I was wondering if one of you would recommend me some links about the history of this festival.
I really need to analyse how the festival has evolved through the years, if it attracts more local fans or if international fans also join the event. How it's organized and so on...
I read that it's managed by the Cavern City tour, but that it also has links with the Matthew Street festival and some organization named "Magical History tours". What are those links ?
I will be very grateful if one of you could help me to get thoses answers, because i've been looking for them for a long time now and i got a bit confused.
Thanks !!!
(I apologize for the grammatival mistakes, english is not my mother tongue, I'm from Belgium)

Yeah, it's just the actual MSF they were talking about, and not International Beatle Week, which is organised by CCT. I personally don't like MSF, too busy, and you cant get near any stages. Mondays are always pretty quiet for me during BW. Would prefer it if CCT organised more for the BW people, rather than just Cavern or Cavern Pub on a Monday.

I really don't think so (NOT Cancelled) as I know of a band here in Canada that was just asked to play this year (2012), so delete your fears and get ready to celebrate the "act you've known for all these years!"
