Both The Beatles and RSATH play New Brighton. After a fantastic night for all the bands load their vans and end up heading to Stormville. It ends up a speed contest. Buses storming in wrong lanes, on two wheels and Jammo (RSATH driver) and Neil (Aspinal?) going through the Mersey Tunnel side by side. absolute chaos and RSATH wins the race. Ringo announces he has written to the Texan Chamber of Commerce to see about emigrating. Everyone is stunned Ty nearly batters Ringo for being disloyal stopped by Johnny. He takes a break from the band but is increasingly edgy. Rory get arrested for the I Love Rory graffiti in relation to the Mersey Beat poll and is relegated to fourth even though there are dodgy votes for The Beatles and RSATH. RSATH actually have a fan club and sometime Rory has to be rescued from screaming fans.

The story is retold of the Mersey Beat poll that causes agro and how RSATH are docked points. The Beatles and RSATH play for Sam Leach's engagement party and there are a couple of wonderful photos of Rory who has never drank alcohol before is trolleyed. Lennon ends up asleep in a bath. Off to France to play for the US forces buys the purple Vauxhall Cresta. Stuart Sutcliffe dies.

Things just got rather weird even for the heroes of out story. Band at Skegness a fight break out in the audience which is exasperated when Johnny accidently swears at the brawlers. They turn on the band Rory only gets away by dodging them on some train tracks but Johnny get surrounded. He actually jumps into a pool which seems to be smelly and full of rubber and the crowd run away laughing. He does not understand why until talking to a barman he is told that an elephant on loan to the camp died in the pool (probably from heart attack) while being washed and despite the best efforts of a crane was still in the pool.
Johnny gets into trouble with the management for getting caught sleeping with a guest and the band nearly get fired. A compromise is reached. Johnny can play but not live on site. He and Ringo hire a caravan and live on the other side of the camp boundary with Rory getting them meals. Lennon and McCartney come to the caravan and tell them all that Pete Best has been fired and they want Ringo for the Beatles. Ringo immediately says yes and leaves two days later. Rory is shocked as they have no drummer. They eventually get a red coat to help out but the management say they will not be hiring then band again.

Ringo and the band have a mini fallout as Ringo wants his money back on the stage costume while Johnny wants maney for the caravan. Things are settled quickly and friendships remain. Iris is seeing both Paul and Frank Ifield which annoys Frank. Incident with Toby the day and the very odd teeth letter from George. Band are now struggling loosing drummers and Rory not only does the diving board summersault during a gig but has two accidents one lands him in hospital. they record for Oriole but only get limited success. The Beatles are on their way to superstardom. Johnny and Rory need a new direction and new management.

Rory is at Anfield when the Liverpool sound hits the terraces. He is moved to tears with both joy and sadness that all his mates are hitting it big but not them. Epstein offers to record RSATH. It does not go well with their normal fare not getting Epstein's attention and America is way too pop for his taste but that is the only track that gets done. Ringo Iris and Shane Fenton (now Iris's boyfriend) are on backing vocals. The Beatles tour the US RSATH tours Mallorca and Ibiza.

They record the single America that flops and the work starts to ebb away. Paul sings Yesterday on TV after telephoning the family to watch especially. Low Walters leaves. Brien Epstein dies and The Cavern goes bankrupt. RSATH are there on the last night playing as per usual and actually barricade themselves in to the Cavern to try and stop the bailiffs gaining entry (this despite not getting paid). Rory is stunned that Paul and John are at the 1966 cup final supporting Everton as he thought Lennon was a red. Albert Stubbins is on the cover of Sergeant Pepper and Rory just does not get the Beatles sound such as Tomorrow Never Knows. Ty Brien dies and the band break up.

Rory is engaged to a stunning dancer (name and photograph in the book) None of his relationships have lasted more than a week. Her family insist he does a normal job, he works as a taxi driver and gets arrested for swearing at the other cabbie. He insists he could not get the word "For" out fast enough as his stammer is back with a vengeance.
He is fired and lasts only 6 months working on a boat. He then I let go from working in a hairdressers again for his stammer. On holiday with the fiancé, he is devastated one day when looking for her to find her making love to another man on the beach who she then introduces to him (again name provided) Rory is shattered and breaks off the engagement. He sells the Vauxhall Cresta.
A Dr tells him to forget about his life in show business. He must adjust to normal life. Rory is struggling with his stammer but takes a job as a door to door salesman selling stationary. He is mistaken for another vocalist by a customer and flees Liverpool after working as a Deejay and as a water ski instructor he befriends two German circus performers. They sell him a Cadillac. He then drives to Amsterdam to find work.

He enjoys Amsterdam finds work and learns a little Dutch and settles in with an arty crowd. Lives in and attic and has his parents over for a visit. At the beginning of 1972 a telegram arrives to inform him his Dad has had a stroke. He leaves Amsterdam wearing an afghan coat and arrived three hours too late and his father has passed. Things are hard Violet is a mess Rory is increasingly detached from his social group Vi needs more ECT. Rory has on going dental appointments for tooth ache and Iris is only living a couple of minutes away from Rory and Vi. No sign of the pair and Iris asks the neighbours to check they are ok. On entering the house a suicide note is found written by violet. Rory dead in bed with sheet over his face. An empty whisky bottle on the nightstand and a bottle of pills with 5 left from the hundred on the label. Violet has drunk 4 glasses of whisky and an empty whisky bottle is on the nightstand. She has taken many tablets.
I know the author is trying to make a case that Rory took his life but it is just odd how the ultimate showman would go out like that with no note knowing his sister would be the person to find him.
The book acknowledges contributions from everyone from Iris to Mike McCartney to Ringo Starr. The majority of the people in the book come over very well. Ringo comes over as someone who is eternally restless The Beatles as a band who were in a shambles before they started writing and getting their act together. RSATH were let down on occasion and were also lost because they were a live act when the art of the studio and the songwriter come to the fore. Rory Johnny Ty and the rest of the band come over as wonderful raucous funny lads who loved playing music and living the rock n roll lifestyle and it has been a pleasure to translate the book.
Oh and Rory liked the Rolling Stones.

Can I just make it clear that although the Beatles are mentioned a lot in the book I do not think it is a hatchet job on them. I think a lot of the books makes you realise what a seismic shift occurred within the UK during the 1950's. Lonnie Donagon should be more respected for the pivotal role he played creating the UK music scene. Rory Storm and the Hurricane's were essentially a live act when the music scene was heading indoors and into the studio. I think they needed a writer and instead of everyone thinking they should be the new Beatles they actually in hindsight could have been the Rolling Stones. They had rotten luck throughout their career and it is interesting how in today's terms you can see things that now would be a law suit being settled with a handshake.
They deserved better and even the fact that I had to translate a book from Dutch to get the story (or at least this version of the story) annoys me.

Some very good points there. I guess at least someone took the time to actually write a book about them, just shame it wasn't written in Rory's native tongue.

I have tried to give you an overview of the book. This and the sites on the net are essentially all that is available. I am amazed that this is not available in English and stories such as Bus chicken and the elephant were news to me. Just utterly frustrating.

Usually if you email the seller he'll put it up again for you. Just hit the 'contact seller' button and ask.

Rocky contacted the seller so we will see how that progresses.
On a side note I have only ever seen two photographs of Rory and the band from their later years (long hair) does anyone know of any others.
