SONGWISE, I'd say the pre 1965 period is best. These SONGS anyone could play and they would sound good. Not so for the later material, which is best when the Beatles' version is heard. Sgt Pepper doesn't work so well with some guy and an acoustic guitar. That's a very good point. A bloke with a guitar in a bar sounds good playing Love Me Do. In fact some of the best covers I've heard are of pre 1965 stuff. Yeah, that makes sense. The early stuff is good in a more general sense, whereas it's harder to imagine anyone else doing their later stuff.

I love the Yellow Submarine Songtrack because that covers my favorite period. I love all of it, but late '65 thru mid '68 is my fave. They sound great, their songwriting was at an all-time creative high and they were starting to find their individual voices, which took them in some really interesting directions.

First of all, the dividing line between early and late should not be 1965. Help is definitely early. Late starts with Rubber Soul (including Day Triper/We Can Work It Out).
As for which I prefer, I can't decide.

Yeah, I kinda agree with Someotherguy - weird though isn't it, considering both albums were released the same year!

I've always preferred their later stuff. And I define "later" as meaning "post-touring." Early, for me, goes all the way through their pivotal Revolver album, and later begins with Sgt. Pepper. At least for me. After all, their albums did get better and better through the years.
Having said that, if you play a musical instrument such as the Beatles played, their earlier stuff is so much more "doable," as has been pointed out above. I do like it all.

I'm definitely more of a "later" Beatles guy. But that being said I also appreciate their '62-'65 era stuff. (Particularly '65... that was when they were really starting to do more interesting stuff in my opinion...)

I rather the later years. i love alot of songs from the early period, but i think the later half of songs got more inventive and state of the art,not just love songs. obviously there are alot of great exeptions from love songs in pre-65,but i think i rather the later years. and i agree with marvinmarks, they got more creative in 65.

The earlier stuff had all the energy and could be danced to, the later stuff was the Beatles experimenting with their music like with the psychedelic stuff and heavier stuff like Yer Blue and Happiness is a warm gun. Which do i prefer? depends on my mood.

For me it's both Early and Later eras for the Beatles. The early stuff is where The Beatles set alot of trends both musical and even social such as the haircuts and the way they dressed. The music in the early era was more pop oriented. Where the later stuff started with the albums Rubber Soul on through Let it Be. With the Sgt. Pepper album is where in the later years the music became more serious and stayed that way through Let it Be.

I love it all...from the home recordings at Paul's house before they made it big to the great swan song that was "Abbey Road"... Every year had something incredible to behold.

I probably don't have a very revealing answer. My two favorite albums are 'With The Beatles' and The White Album.

this is a really good topic, its difficult cos i love all the early stuff and great to dance too, but my favourite album being rubber soul closely followed by sergeant pepper, id have to go with the mid to late. But please please me is still amazing

In the last few years I've largely side-stepped my adored 60s (wouldn't dream of listening to anything afterwards) in order to play and (really) understand all the stuff that influenced the Fabs and the 60s.
As such, the steady build up via Little Richard, Buddy, Eddie, Gene and loads of compilations on Ace over the last three or four years to the recent 'rediscovery' of 'Please, Please, Me' for next month's anniversary, has put that LP in its true context, and........ IT IS FABULOUS!
