I find Revolver an unsettling album to listen to. While there are weak tracks on Rubber Soul, such as Think For Yourself, The Word and Girl, the album as a whole is a much more enjoyable listen. I guess musical taste is subjective but I personally would never consider Think For Yourself, The Word and Girl as Rubber Soul's weaknesses. To my mind, Michelle and What Goes On are the album's low points (and that's at a stretch!). Also, I'm intrigued as to what is it about Revolver that you find unsettling. I am of a similar mind about the White Album - but I consider that to be a good point! AL

Rubber Soul just edges it for me how can any album with "Nowhere Man" "In My Life" and "Girl" be second? although I also love "Revolver" as well Looking at those songs I realise a strange thing ,I always thought Paul just had the edge over John ,maybe that started after Revolver.

Revolver for me.
I enjoy the variety of different songs on the album, the four are evermore progressing as musicians in general and it is clear in both of these albums, but more clear in Revolver in my opinion. In particular Taxman is where we can George really start to flourish in his songwriting talents.

It's great stand-off i have to say. Rubber Soul has the perfect balance of effort into each song to make everyone pleasurable, whereas Revolver focuses on particular songs like Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine. It's really close, but I have to give it to Rubber Soul. The whole album is just a smoother experience, the greatest of their Rock n' Roll era (before paul mccartney died in a car crash lol)

They are two fantastic albums but REVOLVER edges it for me. Revolver has more of an Eastern/Pyschedelic feel and a more progressive edgy guitar style. I am surprised The Beatles included "What Goes On" on Rubber Soul it is a poor song by their standards. In the same breath "Yellow Submarine" utterly spoils Revolver, "Rain" or "Baby Your a rich man" would've been adequate replacements. Philip

Philip It's significant (or maybe not) that the tracks you mention are both vocally led by Ringo! I do feel, however that 'What Goes On' sits a lot easier on Rubber Soul than what 'Yellow Submarine' does on Revolver. I am not of the opinion that 'What Goes On' is a poor song, even, as suggested by you, by the high standards of The Beatles. The guitar work by George on 'What Goes On' is quite masterful and accomplished for it's time and I think Lennon, McCartney and Starr (who were credited as writers) deliberately, and successfully wanted the song to sound similar to the Country & Western sound of Carl Perkins. 'Yellow Submarine' is certainly the odd one out from all the tracks on Revolver but I don't agree with you that it "utterly spoils Revolver". It doesn't have the cutting edge of songs like 'Taxman', 'And Your Bird Can Sing', 'Doctor Robert' and 'Got To Get You Into My Life'. Mind you, neither does 'Tomorrow Never Knows' but I do feel that 'Yellow 'Submarine' is a kind of singalong chill out song with a nice, quaint vibe feel about it. I take your point regarding 'Baby You're A Rich Man' or 'Rain' being an adequate replacement but hey, Revolver just wouldn't be Revolver without 'Yellow Submarine'! Preferring either Rubber Soul or Revolver is always going to be a personal choice and over the years, depending on what mood I'm in, the day of the week, what I had for my supper, if my football team wins, whether the sun is shining etc, I have alternated between them both. At the moment, I don't have a preference but I don't care. They're both incredible albums.

Rubber Soul is where Sgt.Pepper began. Rubber Soul was Sgt.Pepper being born. Revolver was Sgt. Pepper as a child growing into an adolescent. Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Sgt.Pepper becomes a man.

The can't be compared. There's only 8 or 9 months between them but the change is phenomenal. The Beatles progressed and changed more between 2 albums than most bands progress or change in their whole career.
johnny103068, I do like your description. Boy-teenager-adult.

Very tough decision, but Rubber Soul wins only by a couple points.

1965 was a very underated year for the Beatles.
Rubber Soul and Help both had classic songs, while they also made a film and continued touring.
