Have you bought a new CD? Have you recently discovered a new band? What music are you listening to now? Tell us here and maybe post a track or two for us to listen to (Depending on how popular this thread is, I may give it its own board in the "Other Music" section)

Some years back I noticed that the same songwriter's name appeared on a lot of songs that were huge favourites of mine:
THE EXCITERS "TELL HIM" SOLOMON BURKE "CRY TO ME" + "EVERYBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY TO LOVE" THE ANIMALS "BABY LET ME TAKE YOU HOME" THE MCCOYS "HANG ON SLOOPY" LULU "I'LL COME RUNNING OVER" CLIFF BENNETT & THE REBEL ROUSERS "ONE WAY LOVE" THEM "HERE COMES THE NIGHT" ERMA FRANKLIN "PIECE OF MY HEART"
The songwriter's name was already very familiar though because he had also written one of my favourite songs of all time - Twist And Shout! After a bit of digging (which was not that easy in the days before the internet!!) I discovered that "Bert Russell" was just one of the names used by songwriter and producer Bert Berns. I also discovered that he died of heart failure at the age of 38 in 1967, not long after he'd produced Van Morrison's first solo hit "Brown Eyed Girl."
Well getting to the point, I today bought a CD collection of Bert Bern's work, which I would recommend without any hesitation - you too will be surprised at how many classic songs he has had a hand in either as a producer or songwriter. Here's a track that's actually not on the CD, "I'll Come Running Over" by Lulu, written and produced by Bert Berns in London. This is a great example of British R'n'B with the 15 year-old Lulu delivering a blistering vocal and also featuring a young guitarist called Jimmy Page!!! Let me know what you think!

The Lulu track is something special. Although she was only 15 at the time, she sang with an abundance of soul and energy rarely encountered from one so young. It's interesting to note that, of some of your all time favourite songs, Solomon Burke appears twice. The intro and rhythm of the Lulu song reminds me very, very much of Burke's 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love' (on your list, coincidentally enough . In fact, Lulu's song is a variation on a classic soul/blues theme that can be heard on many records made during the late fifties and sixties. Take a listen and see what I mean : Solomon Burke - Everybody Needs Somebody To Love [music]http://www.filefreak.com/pfiles/46211/Solomon%20Burke%20-%20Everybody.mp3[/music] Which brings me niceley onto the main theme of this thread. I had some cash left over from Xmas and I had a trip to Newcastle last weekend to buy some music related stuff. To cut a long story short, I bought a CD by Solomon Burke called 'Don't Give Up On Me', recorded and released in 2002. My goodness! He's well into his sixties here and the voice is still as spine chilling as ever. Produced by the legendary Joe Henry, there are 11 tracks on the CD and not a duff track among them. The arrangements are sparse and very soulful but he still does the business on the up tempo songs. I cannot recommend this CD highly enough. I have it in my CD player in the car right now and enjoy it tremendously whilst driving to and from work. Here's the title track and, surely it's no coincidence that it features an organ quite heavily! I'm now beginning to think that it's me who has an organ fixation ! Let me know what you think. *Warning* - Very emotional. Cracks me up every time

Yeah, you're right, that same chord progression can be found in many R'n'B hits of the day including Can I Get A Witness by Marvin Gay.
Solomon Burke: "Don't Give Up On Me" - Great tune, kinda reminds me of a slowed down version of Try A Little Tenderness. It's a great mix of classic soul with a contemporary production. Great stuff! Oh yeah, and what a fine organ it has too! "Stepchild" - Brilliant - I can almost smell the smoke in the blues bar with this one! Another great track! Any idea who the musicians are on this album?

I do indeed. Rather than pick bits out of various reviews, here's a review from 'Rolling Stone' magazine. It's fascinating stuff too when you read about the musicians who contributed their songs and the organist is Rudy Copeland (who's blind by the way) who plays the organ in the church where Solomon Burke preaches. This may convince you to buy what is one of the best albums I've heard in a long, long while.

At the moment I am listening to (The) Eels - I've been into E's brand of music since I first heard Novocaine For The Soul and have bought every release since. Today I received in the post E's first album, recorded in 1992, called "A Man Called E" - it is absolutely brilliant, I haven't stopped playing it!
I particularly love this track: "Nowheresville" - E [music]http://www.fileupyours.com/files/150873/Nowheresville.mp3[/music]

Eels are awesome, thanks for posting that track, I've not heard it before. Nice Beatle reference in it too.

Another Eels fan here. Shootananay is my personal fav.
I'm just getting into a band called Okkervil River. I've got 4 albums to catch up on. I love it when that happens!

Not many people will have heard of Os Mutantes (Portugese for 'The Mutants') who released around 5 or 6 albums in the late sixties and early seventies. Referred to as a 'Brazilian psychedelic band' some of their output was incredibly adventurous. I've dug out this song. Tell me what you think.

By the way, I see you have Arthur Lee as your username. Big fan of 'LOVE'? Incredible stuff there too if I might add.

Yes, I'm a massive fan of Love and have everything they recorded and released on many CDs. To me, 'Forever Changes' is one of the finest albums of it's genre although trying to categorize it musically is impossible. Eclectic and always in my top 5 albums of all time (which changes occasionally depending on my many moods!), it's a wonderful piece of work. I had the privilege and good fortune of seeing Arthur Lee & 'Love' (Baby Lemonade) twice in the last 4 years, the last time not long before he died (RIP Arthur). A truly remarkable and oft misunderstood man. Check this out. It was a single release : Love - Your Mind And We Belong Together [music]http://www.filefreak.com/pfiles/46211/Love%20-%20Your%20Mind%20And%20We%20Belong%20Together.mp3[/music]

Its in my top 10 of all time also. I have 'Da Capo' and 'Love' also, but never went any later into their catalog after 'FC's'. Thanks for posting the single, but unfortunately it doesnt show up here at work. I'll be sure to check it out at home.

It has happened again - that moment when a song grabs on to the very core of my being!
I cannot stop playing this (10 times and counting!):
The School - "All I Wanna Do Is" [music]http://www.fileupyours.com/files/165347/WannaDo.mp3[/music]
For me, this is absolute perfection - and it's only a demo! AND it turns out they are playing a gig in Islington this Wednesday - I am going!!!
I hope you see the song's beauty too.

Sounds a bit like 'They Don't Know' by Tracy Ullman (with a great cameo by Paul in the videoclip). Ehm...enjoy your concert!
