I just acquired a copy of the US Capitol album 'The Beatles' Second ALbum', which says it's the Dr Ebbetts mono, but it sounds like stereo (or maybe duophonic?) to me. I also got a cppy of the same album, again Dr Ebbetts, in stereo, and it sounds the same as the 'mono' version.
ANybody know if this is normal? Is the 'mon' version actually some sort of fake stereo? All references I've seen on torrent sites etc. list the mono version as containing exactly teh same files (names, file sizes, etc.) as are in my 'mono' version, so it looks like what's circulating as 'mono' is actually stereo. Can that be right?
ANy info much appreciated.

But in general, one way to tell if something is mono or stereo is to turn the "balance" knob way left while the song is playing, then way right. If it sounds the same either way (of course it will be softer in volume than when the balance knob is in the center) then it is not stereo. Early Beatles stereo is pretty easy to tell - the voices are generally in one speaker very loud, and in the other very soft. A harder way to tell if something is stereo or mono is to sit right in the middle of the two speakers (ideally, though sitting in the car is OK), and listen hard to see if any sounds are louder in the right ear than the left, or vice versa. BTW - can you explain that term duophonic? I know it was some sort of fake stereo for the early 60s, but do you happen to know the technology? Thanks!
