I went to see the play last night. Absolutely brilliant. The four actresses who portrayed the girls were spot on, both with their accents [most were not from Liverpool] their acting, and their music. They really put over those beat numbers, and took us all back to the Sixties. The story was based very faithfully on their career, and the show included portrayals of many noted characters from the era, including Bob Wooler, Bill Harry, Brian Epstein, Manfred Weissleder and Klaus Voorman. The little-known episodes where the Liverbirds worked with the Kinks and the Rolling Stones are shown. [Cast rehearsing, l-r Sarah Workman, Molly Grace Cutler, Lisa Wright, Alice McKenna] Because the girls stayed in Hamburg, being resident at the famed Star Club, they are not so well known back in Great Britain, although they had several big hit records over in Germany, and even toured Japan. As well as being a musical trip down memory lane, the show is very funny. I loved it, as a night of live theatre is hard to beat. As a surprise bonus the two remaining Liverbirds were brought up from the audience to join in an encore. Sylie took the drums while Mary strapped on the bass to reprise their biggest hit "Peanut Butter" A beautiful way to conclude a brilliant show.

Lisa using a Ric how kooool! We got to get Mary a Hofner lol What IS that? A Music Man Stingray? Looks like a maple fretboard. Hofner Viol Basses have gone 'way down in price over the past few years. But people would complain about her playing it right-handed.

Did you notice the 'scratch pad' on the back of the one girls Gretsch guitar? These came out in the 60's, but never caught on. In fact Elvis had one on his 1964 Gretsch Country Gentleman.

As I posted elsewhere, Mary used this Framus bass for most of her time in Hamburg... I have not been able to identify the exact model. She also used a Gibson bass on their German TV appearences.

I have not been able to identify the exact model. She also used a Gibson bass on their German TV appearences. That's one of those slide bar pickup basses. I've seen one before let me try to find a picture. Notice the pickup in the one pic is at the bottom and the next pic it's at the top. lol

Framus Star Bass sold in Germany in the 60's another invention that never caught on. So you see very few today. She may have had it modified somewhat, those parts can be moved around.

Well done Rocky, thanks for finding the model of that bass. Some models of the Star [the Hollywood] have a different headstock, with 3 tuners per side, rather than the Fender type used by Mary.

The show was such a sucess that the Royal Court scheduled another run for later in 2020. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown this has been cancelled. A pity, I would have gone to see them again.
