As the White Album is 40 years old - I thought I'd gather everyone's thoughts on what in your opinion are the album's highs and lows.
So.... what's your opinion?

Hmm.
Highs: Back in the U.S.S.R., Blackbird, I'm So Tired, Martha My Dear, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun...
A few other personal favorites would be Piggies, Helter Skelter, Honey Pie, I Will, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da...honestly I like most of the album. If I were to pick lows, it would probably something like Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9.
In the category of weird thoughts I get into my head: Why Don't We Do It In The Road? sometimes bugs me because it's so repetitive. Only when I'm feeling particularly persnickety though. Also, the strings in Good Night make me smile because they make me think of the very ending of the Love soundtrack.
Other than that, I don't often listen to Revolution 1 because I like the faster single version of it better so my brain keeps telling the music to go faster.

Lows: Honey Pie and (please don't kill me!) While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Why do you think While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a low? If you don't come up with a suitable answer............well let's just say I know people!!!

I've just never liked it - I always found the arrangement dour. And it annoys me that Eric Clapton plays lead when the writer was one of the world's greatest guitarists and was more than capable of playing it!
Strangely enough I happen really like the "Love" version though.

Yeah, I know what you mean about Clapton doing the solo and not Harrison. However I see it as a testament to Harrsions musicianship and songwriting that he knew instinctively that Clapton could just walk into the studio and play his blues rock thing and get the desired result that Harrison by his own admission took days to try to achieve but never could. And to be honest what Clapton played was exactly what the song needed, in my view. I don't think Harrison was ever comfortable with this style of guitar work i.e. the improvised, balls out blues rock guitar solo. His style was much more thoughtful, planned and crafted. But I agree with you, I really wish it was Harrison playing the solo.

Strangely enough I happen really like the "Love" version though. I agree with you there, though I do like the original version too. The Love version was actually the first one I heard, and I always thought the tempo and string accompaniment fit well with the lyrics.

My favorite 5 white album songs are Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Long Long Long, Revolution 1 and Rocky Raccoon. The next 5 favorites would be Yer Blues, I'm So Tired, Sexy Sadie, Helter Skelter and Blackbird.
Lennon & Harrison, in my opinion, were the better songwriters for this album. Just about everything John contributed would not have felt out of place on "JL/POB".
I love the fast version of "Revolution", but "Revolution 1" is something special. I love the horns, and I love how the lead guitar is faded in and out.
The only songs I occasionally skip over are "Revolution 9" and "Good Night". Once in a while I require the full white album experience, however.

Ok, I recently bought the White Album, listened to it and here's my opinion. Enough songs for two albums so, if I were in charge MY first record for the year 1968 should have: Back in the USSR/Dear Prudence/Glass onion/While my guitar gently weeps/Happiness is a warm gun/I'm so tired/Birthday/Yer blues/Everybody's got something to hide except me end my monkey/Sexy sadie/Helter skelter/Revolution 1/Savoy truffle. Roughly 42:27 of music, perfectly good for a LP of the era. And with the other songs I would have made another very, very good album later in the same year.

The Beatles White album marked a departure for the band in several ways. Almost no one, however, argued its brilliance. It received almost universal acclaim from fans and critics alike, and went number one in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Behind the multitude of hits and mass appeal lay a different story: this album was marred by serious turmoil within the band. Though they reconciled at the time, creative differences were apparent, and the Beatles White album in some ways was the beginning of the end.
The album became an instant success, spending seven weeks at number one in the UK and nine weeks in the United States. It has gone platinum 19 times and is the 10th best-selling album of all time in the United States. With songs such as “Revolution” and “Dear Prudence,” the Beatles White album has left its mark in music.
