This is a thread that will run parallel with Mr. Kite's 'Loving The Album 365' thread. Or as a compliment to it. Or as straight out competition..... I've been in a pretty bad mood the last two or so years and it's only gotten worse so I'm back more regular now. (why?) As a result of being cross these last many months I've been listening to anything and everything and have decided to share my non-cool interests with the two or three lonely souls that will read this nonsense. (who?) I have also decided, but I have thought this way for a LONG time, that there is no un-cool music. Except what is on the radio now. So hold on and just ignore me at your peril. It's too perilous.

It looks like there's nothing there but there is: It's the Beatles' white album. My favorite album of all time. Being that I was 15 and this album was 14 when we first met, it was love at first sight. And over the years the flame burns in varying intensity but it is still my number one. This album had the biggest impact on me as a music fan and a musician: that you don't have to keep different genres separate but they can all be put together on the same album. And also that anything can be music: a sock, a bird, or a fuming beaker. Or even Revolution 9. This is a very deep and rich album full of variety and lots of moments both light and heavy. It all starts here for me. Everything that I ever liked before or after I heard this album can all emanate out from this album as a starting point. There is no past, there is no future, there is only this as ground zero.

First up (to be posted anyway) is the pre-fab four with their fourth album. The Monkees - Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. By their third album, 'Headquarters' Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork had wrested the creative controls away from the show's original producers so that they could be a 'real' band. The result was an album actually played by The Monkees. This one, the second to follow that formula, with one or two extra session players is even better and Headquarters was quite good indeed. It may sound strange for The Monkees but this album has a bit more of a darker edge than previous efforts. Almost grown up. And touching on more mature subjects too including drugs, groupies and pursuing the 'dream'. This is a serious album by serious musicians trying to make a serious mark on the musical landscape. There's psych-folk, pop, early use of the moog and a groovy tune with a 5/4 time sig! Over all a great mid-late 60s slab of good solid music. After this record, some in the band decided to go back to the idea of producers and pros running the recording sessions for each individual's number. A giant step backwards which really discouraged Peter most of all after they had worked so hard to be able to do their own stuff AS A GROUP. He would be the first to quit the following year.

The Monkees I think were a much better group than people appreciated at the time. Track like Valerie and Porpoise Song are really strong tracks and the band actually get played next to new and old bands on BBC 6 Music.
I do have a soft spot for them.

Ha, ha. Mr Kite and I look at this record a bit differently. They are certainly not a rock band. But being one of my earliest exposures to pop/rock music, they have stuck with me. I'm playing 'Door Into Summer' rather a lot right now.

I'm playing 'Door Into Summer' rather a lot right now. I like everyone else watched The Monkees growing up , but never thought of them as a group more of a T.V. Show with a few songs thrown in . But they never really had me wanting to go out and buy there records They did some great songs though . Once I had heard The Beatles though it was curtains for the lads .

Hey. My first 'Record Store Day' purchase EVER!!! Although it's of 4 year old stock but whatever..... From 1968, LORD SITAR. A bunch of 60s covers done on the sitar! With a cool backing band. Sounds very of it's time. So with that in mind, I'm going to totally drop some aspirin, put this on and rocket right into fricken orbit! (man.) Totally Outta Sight. See below for a fab Beatles cover.

Odd that the track from Fiddler on the Roof is next to some groovy 60's music.

VIONEL SWITCHIE Mixcloud. So I've discovered Mixcloud and have joined a group of vinyl fanatics in the UK who like to record playlists off of their favorite vinyl. So I'm contributing the odd 2 hour session of my own favorite vinyl pieces. Unfortunately my record player is wearing out so you can perhaps hear that in the slight wobble on some of the songs. I'm hoping to get a new one soonish so I can continue to make these playlists. I've included the link to my first contribution to the site. It is called 'extreme' listening so the stuff I like may not always appeal to all people but it's fun to put these things together and basically play records for people who appreciate that sort of thing. There's no one like that in my 'real' life so..... I'm also going to start my own channel on Mixcloud to play stuff that isn't nessecarily vinyl but some of my favorite music from all formats., I'm going to structure it sort of like a radio program, a little over an hour long and with talking bits in between to explain some of my musical choices. Again, 'extreme' choices but I may get an audience. Please go over if you like and hear, at least the 2 hour vinyl playlist a cobbled together on VIONEL SWITCHIE. Leave a comment too if you like. And check out some of the other contributors. I'll also let you know when I start my own 'radio' program too and hopefully get a few listeners and comments etc...... www.mixcloud.com/vionel_swichie_and_friends/guest-show-derek-thomas-extreme/

Sorry I haven't been on much lately. A close relative died in May and he was a hoarder so We've been VERY busy cleaning up the back garden and will be moving on to the house during the winter months. Helping my aunt out. On the plus side I've inherited about 500 LPs from him. So lots of stuff to listen to and catch up on as he had a lot of stuff I never got around to getting myself. Meanwhile, in addition to doing the odd 'vinyl only' playlist for vionel switchie on mixcloud I'm considering starting my own 'radio' program on mixcloud. It's going to be very eclectic, or annoying as my straight friends would say. I should have the first episode of PARADISE OVERGROUND up on Monday the 26th and I'll post the link here. Hope one or two of you check it out. I have nearly a thousand albums now so I should play them for my friends. At least the ones who are tired of the ordinary. PARADISE OVERGROUND. If you like any of the music pictured in the blurry shot, you should like the 'show'. You also get to hear my monotone, boring voice with the uninteresting chatter. Good luck.

Are you a music consumer who has grown tired of the ordinary? Are you someone who wants to hear something they've never heard before? Do you want to be reminded about cool music you heard back in the day when radio used to be allowed to play music of an adventurous nature but now it's not good for the bottom line anymore and you're scratching your head wondering where you can possibly hear those wondrous sounds again? PARADISE OVERGROUND is where this all can happen. PARADISE OVERGROUND. NOT the same 40 songs over and over again! www.mixcloud.com/Amadeus99/episode-1/

I just buried my second family member last weekend. I'll be glad to see the back end of 2019. Meanwhile I'll just wallow in my own nostalgia while I wait for 2020 (after all, hindsight...) Maybe you want to too. In 2 days...

Did you ever think to yourself, "nothing good ever came out of Liverpool!"? Well think that no more. I finally acquired this bad boy (girl) on vinyl. Nice psychedelic stylings for your drug parties. (being older now I'm sure we're all on something. Even Aspirin.) I was hoping for the clear vinyl but the vendor didn't check. He just assumed.

Also playing a bit of doom metal. This is Bloody Panda. Nice name. And the album cover basically sums up what's in the grooves. Take early Black Sabbath, slow it down and make it a bit more tuneless, add a Japanese girl singer who is strangely atonal and this is what you get with these guys. Suits my mood sometimes.
