I can't remember if there was already a thread for Squeeze but if not, there is now...
From one of my favourite bands of all time, one of my favourite songs of all time - I've known this song for decades, in fact, when I was a kid, I used to go to to sleep listening to this on repeat, but I've only just found this official video... however, please ignore the video, close your eyes and let the music and lyrics create their own images! In my head, it always conjured up a black and white kitchen sink drama about a troubled teenager girl growing up in the sixties... see what you think...

Another absolutely brilliant song from Squeeze easily in my top 10 favourite songs of all-time! Glenn Tilbrook is such an underrated guitarist - absolutely amazing solo from him in this and a very young Jools Holland tickling the ivories!

Love Argybargy and about half of East Side Story. At their best, Squeeze had that kind of Beatle-esque smart pop thing going that is just so much fun. Anyway, I think my fave song is Separate Beds. Here's a clip from the concert MTV broadcast back in the early 80's that got me into Squeeze...remember the good old days when MTV actually showed music

I would thoroughly recommend giving their Cool For Cats album a listen too but yeah Argy Bargy is a great LP! One of my favourites on that album was If I Didn't Love You, but the chorus always got on my nerves somewhat with its repetition (which I recently fixed in a re-edited version for my own listening pleasure).

That's very cool! I think if they let you produce the track it would've gone top 10 I just read that Tilbrook says he put that "If I, If I, If I" bit in because of the "the record jumps on the scratch" line in the verse ( wiki page on If I Didn't Love You) so I guess he had a good reason I also really love how they double the vocals with Tilbrook singing the high part and Difford singing the low...their voices just sound so great together. Has anyone here heard the 1984 "Tilbrook & Difford" solo album? I read that some people consider it a lost Squeeze album but I've never heard it...

I should check them out. The only album I was aquainted with was the debut on orange/red vinyl. I understand that it wasn't representative of what they became. My uncle had it. Wasn't that a Rundgren production?
What album would you recommend for a novice,?

What album would you recommend for a novice,? Argybargy. Pulling Mussels From a Shell, Another Nail in my Heart, Separate Beds, I Think I'm Go-Go, If I Didn't Love You...most of it is absolutely irresistible to this Beatles maniac

Haha But to be honest, it's absolutely baffling to me how these songs weren't more popular! Ahh - I'd always thought that was probably the reason for the repetition in If I Didn't Love You, so thanks for finally confirming that! I actually bought that as an import single at the time (Canadian, if memory serves) - it was on 3 inch vinyl, as opposed to 7" and was actually already an edit as the intro wasn't repeated in the middle (just before before the guitar solo) - I'll have to get that record out and give it a spin as it's been decades since I heard that version! Although I recall that Difford & Tilbrook album coming out, I never got round to buying it and it still hasn't been re-released on CD (unless you want to pay £85 for a dodgy copy on eBay!). So, aside from a couple of tracks included on a compilation album (the Squeeze Story?), I have yet to hear it in its entirety. Their vocals are pretty unique - with Chris vocal doubling up Glen's but an octave lower - they also do that with their guitar solos on a few tracks as well!

Wasn't that a Rundgren production? What album would you recommend for a novice,? I bought that on red vinyl too! I think it was mostly produced by John Cale (of Velvet Underground fame!) - true, it's not as good as Argy Bargy or Cool for Cats but it had a few good moments - Bang Bang, Strong in Reason, Model and of course Take Me I'm Yours among a couple of others but it was clear they were still trying to find their "sound". I agree with Dennis, definitely try Argybargy! But you can't really go wrong with any of their albums from Cool for Cats onwards - East Side Story is a another brilliant one, produced by mostly by Elvis Costello, and includes that Vanity Fair track I posted at the start of this tread, Tempted as well as the criminally ignored Is That Love!

OK. So I tried Argybargy and liked it. Over here they were initially known as UK Squeeze. Because there was a band here (north america) called Squeeze. There were a number of cases like that. Bush became Bush X. Squeeze became UK Squeeze. The Beat became The English Beat. The 60s Nirvana became Nirvana UK. The first time I spoke to an English guy about the English Beat he didn't know what the heck......

Yeah, I remember that being the case with the "UK" prefix! Any favourite tracks? Are you going to try any of their other albums?

I've managed to get hold of a copy of the album and it's in the box. Warning - it's very 'eighties'
