How about these girls? Local Liverpool trio in 1961. The Shimmy Shimmy Queens - Marie Williams, Joan Pratt, and Maureen O'Donnell I wonder whatever happened to them? *btw brew I couldn't watch your video. UK only.

I've never heard of the Shimmy Shimmy Queens before; good find Rocky. The BBC I=Player is UK only, but some content gets shown on PBS in America, eventually. Also, no doubt on Youtube in a few weeks. By the way, Carol Kaye is also featured; she is always worth listening to.
Another girl from the Merseybeat era was Irene Carroll, who later found success as Faith Brown:

There some really talented girl musicians. That program mentioned how many seem to gravitate toward the bass. Here is a nice clipof one such player:

What really shocked me was how badly treated the women musicians were even in todays supposedly more enlightened times.

MrK we had a little thread going on about some of those early girl Liverpool acts on here: beatleforum.proboards.com/thread/8216/merseyside-groupsYou'll notice little Carla Diane Powsey who was the only girl that showed up for that Liverpool bands pic set up by Astrid in '64 I think it was. You'll see her at the bottom left hugging her guitar. She said she was scared to death being with all those boys around and brought her Dad who was standing outside pic shot.

Good to see that photo again. Astrid must have used a ladder to get the elevation. Last week that area was being used for a major movie, being shot in Liverpool. St Georges' Plateau was screened off while the Harry Potter prequel was being shot.

Oh that sounds cool.
Rocky so many interesting acts featured in the programme. The Runaways, Carole Kay, Girlschool, X Ray Specs The Slits (staggered at the shocking treatment of Ari up and I hearing the stories of the comments of David Byrne from Tina Weymouth and what happened to them all was disturbing.
I just checked and I live 17 minutes from Ferryhill where Pauline Murray played with here legendary band in the 1970's and I was too you to go see them but recall the shock at the band playing the local clubs.

I haven't seen this movie yet, maybe I'll watch it today.
There have been stories on how girls have been abused in the music business. If you think it was bad for guys & groups just times that by ten for single women performers. Janis Joplin comes to mind and she was famous just think what happened to the lesser known artists........come to think of it, let's not (too sad).

Lucy Wilkins does a great job on the violin solo at the end of this classic Roxy track:
