"A day in the Life" is the song that makes you see the differences between them. The question is if you preffer the dreamy type or the classic Beatles type. I voted for John
P.S: This is my first post, I'm quite happy to be here

Dylan. lol ....seriously I believe you'll have to think of when they were away from one another (after the breakup) to pick the best one. And the poll so far is true.

I think Paul is the better songwriter for the following reasons:
1 - I generally prefer his songs.
2 - Paul tends to write his songs with the harmonic structure outlined by the melody. You can hear the chords quite clearly when listening to the melody on its own. Good examples include 'Here there & everywhere', 'Hey Jude', 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer', 'Penny Lane', possibly emphasised most in 'Step Inside Love'.
John on the other hand, tended to write with much simpler, almost 'one-note' melodies (in the main), only when the harmony was added underneath does the movement often begin. Great examples of this include 'I am the walrus', Lucy in the sky', 'All you need is love'
Both writers great obviously! And yes, there's many exceptions to the rule - but just an observation from me.
