Hi all -
I really like that bit. It's so slow, it's almost like it's in its own musical universe, paralleling yet independent of the real song, then it joins up with the song proper in a most perfect way as the verse begins ...
Anyone know who played/wrote it? Skillwise, I would think if it were John he would have had to practice it a whole lot prior to taping, which doesn't sound like him. But musically it sounds a lot more like him than Paul or George Martin, both of who had the chops to play the part. Tough call for me.
I know ... it was Mal!
Thanks!

One of my favourite Beatle tracks of all-time!
I consulted a few books and the general consensus is that it is Paul tinkling the ivories!

If the general consensus is correct, Paul never ceases to amaze me. I'm guessing if he played it he wrote it. Incredible! BTW, you being a musician and all, have you ever noticed how the bridge to Sexy Sadie ("One sunny day", etc.) is the exact same chord progression as the verse in "Here, There and Everywhere"? I guess since they were both Lennon-McCartney songs he could use it if he wanted! I wonder if Paul felt flattered or p-o'd?

Although Paul played the piano part, the song was written (words and music) by John. By the way, ever notice how similar John's "Woman" is to Paul's "Here, There and Everywhere"?!!

Oh, I knew that, but I meant for Paul to just one off that piano part is just another awe-inspiring thing about him. I mean, really! By the way, ever notice how similar John's "Woman" is to Paul's "Here, There and Everywhere"?!! It's been too long since I've heard "Woman" to remember, but is it that same I-ii-iii-IV progression? "Really John, I'm very flattered and all, but please go and write your own songs!".

Talking of similarities, listen to Karma Police by Radiohead - especially the "this is what you'll get if you mess with us" bit. There's no denying the "Sexy Sadie" influence!

There's no denying the Sexy Sadie influence! Absolutely! I have a mashup of Karma Police and (I think) A Day In The Life somewhere on the hard disc. They fit amazingly well! I'll try to post it up here one of these days.

Anyone know who played/wrote it? musically it sounds a lot more like him than Paul or George Martin, both of who had the chops to play the part. I wonder about this too. The only alternate source I have is from Anthology Six. There is no piano or bass, but whoever is on the organ is incorporating that dissonant keyboard phrase several times throughout the song. Not only that, but they have a superior sense of harmony on keyboards - as well as making a couple of mistakes. I suspect Billy Preston, but the real point is who wrote the phrase? Was BP just comping a piece which was incorporated into the song? I think the phrase was John's. If that piece was added by Paul and that is him on the organ, this certainly shows his superior harmony skills and compositional abilities. The WA version to me shows John's production sense by the effects on the piano.

Do you know who it is playing organ on the demo track? If not Preston, I would have to guess Martin

Actually, the demo itself has no organ on it. You must be talking about one of the studio takes. The organ was added on it's final day of recording. I always thought it was Lennon.

I posted the SS Anthology version in the YouTube forum (sorry, but this is my main source of rare Beatles music at this time). Check it out. There appears to be an organ on a live take of the song. But who is playing....well, who knows.

Ah - Haven't heard this for a while. Mark Vidler, aka Go Home Productions has remixed loads of stuff like this, not only Beatles stuff but I think he has about 10 albums worth of 'mashups' featuring prominent artistes and songs. Sometimes they don't work (to my ears anyway) and sometimes they sound incredible. I realize I'm getting a bit off track from the original title of this thread but as an example of a Beatles themed remix, have a listen to this. Maybe stuff like this could be moved to an appropriate discussion heading and more stuff could be added? Anyway, this, appropriately enough, is called 'Paperback Believer' Enjoy [music]http://www.filefreak.com/pfiles/46211/10%20Paperback%20Believer.mp3[/music]

I love those Go home Production mixes - I have a few too. You're right, some do REALLY work but some sound an absolute mess! Yeah, it would be great to have a thread for the Beatle mash-ups!

That'd be cool Here you go: [music]http://h1.ripway.com/Bobber3/radiohead-beatles-karmadayinthelife.mp3[/music] That's interesting. I think if a band put out something like that now, it'd do very well. Hell, if they put out that exact version and marketed it as something new I don't think half the population would know any better anyway. The fact that it fits together so well just goes to show how derivative bands have become. Most people having no idea as they tend to bash the older bands without even realizing the amount of influence they've had on their current heroes. If that makes sense.

I have to listen to Woman now. Has Paul ever mentioned any similarities? You know it must drive him crazy. Inside he'd be all, YOU SEE! I was the creative one! He needed me! BTW, was the consensus then that Paul played AND wrote the piano part to Sexy Sadie or that John wrote it and Paul played it? The answers in the thread are ambiguous. Or I have very poor reading comprehension today. In which case, I apologize.
