Oh dear. Trouble in paradise. I don't see heart as Metal. I don't see Deep Purple as metal, therefore I don't agree with it's inclusion and I don't consider NIN as metal. Aren't they labeled as industrial? Or are we talking about industrial metal now? If so, we cam include some Ministry and Lard.
What is the definition of metal? We all agree that Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath are metal but there are disagreements about Heart and Deep Purple. Oh and Thin Lizzy too!

Yeah, Heart, Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy definitely not Heavy Metal.
I can go with Motorhead....or does that count with it being Speed Metal??

Damn it! Who set the rules about how fast you play to qualify as 'speed' metal? If you're too fast do you have to be called thrash metal? I think this thread is for metal. Fast or slow. BUTTT does NIN or Lard come under the metal banner?

As far as the Deep Purple thing goes, Deep Purple In Rock is heavy as trucks. certainly heavier than Highway Star or Smoke On The Water but I don't classify it as metal. An influence on future directions of metal? Sure, but not metal themselves. Too bluesy.

I sort of distanced those bands from 'metal' because there's too many sequencers and computer generated sounds. I might be old fashioned but ultimately I think the best use of the term metal is for 4 guys and electric guitars and drums.
You wot? I'm 20 in that picture. Serious young man.

haven't listened to them. But the subgenre of 'extreme' metal includes a damn wide variation of styles including Sepultura. Of the more underground types, I have a great liking for Boris, Voivod, Sleeping Village, and Sunn O))).
For the strangest metal stuff, google 'ObsceneExtreme' festival and watch some of those bands.

Here's a suggestion: Why don't we ALL make a 66 greatest metal songs list? Then we could see what WE consider metal. P.S. mrmustard Barracuda's riff DOES sound a little like metal...

Good idea. My list isn't what I necessarily think are the greatest metal songs but merely what some of my favorites are. And the artists themselves aren't always a part of the metal genre. Also, I discovered that I had to search to get even my first 20, indicating that perhaps I'm not that big of a metal fan as I might have thought. Yes, that's right. 20. I may come up with more. I have to pick a Boris tune and a Sleeping Village tune. Maybe more. HEY. Came up with a couple more.
Anything by Jethro Tull. 1. Face It - Moby 2. Nile Song - Pink Floyd 3. Aces High - Iron Maiden 4. Tribal Convictions - Voivod 5. Symptom Of The Universe - Black Sabbath 6. Followed The Waves - Auf Der Maur 7. Disturbing The Priest - Black Sabbath 8. El Mundo Frio - Corrupted 9. Pah No - Irepress 10. Rime Of The Ancient Mariner - Iron Maiden 11. Three Days - Jane's Addiction 12. The Sentinal - Judas Priest 13. Red - King Crimson 14. Drug Raid At 4 AM - Lard 15. Call Of Ktulu - Metallica 16. Radiance Of Shadows - Nadja 17. Negative Creep - Nirvana 18. Judith - A Perfect Circle 19. The Patient - Tool 20. White Unicorn - Wolfmother 21. XYU - The Smashing Pumpkins 22. Superunknown - Soundgarden 23. Rusty Cage - Soundgarden 24. Jesus Christ Pose - Soundgarden 25. Feedbacker III - Boris 26. Happiness Passes Away, Mourning Persists - Sleeping Village 27. Thuja Magus Imperium - Wolves In The Throne Room 28. Overture/Temples Of Syrynx - Rush 29. Hell 0))) Ween - Sunn 0)))

I'm going to be getting to my list soon. When I make it, it won't be my favorites, it will be what I think are the GREATEST. There's a difference there.

Jethro Tull ?
Ah yes ! I will do my list tomorrow as I`ve out watching a game and having a beer , so I`m not in full concentration moon mood .
My List will be the greatest as that is my assumption that in my humble they are my favorites , hence greatest . Now I may have mention it but for me half of Sabbath`s albums are the finest Metal every to grace the turntable so my list will be heavy loaded with Sabbath . Why ? Because that`s how good Sabbath are (were) Also I may have some bands that may not be associated with Metal ( Heart for example ) Just because they may not have a hairy chested tattooed silk scarf wearing front man with a bullet belt does`nt mean the track is not a metal track . You Really Got Me by the Kinks has been said that it is the first Metal song to be put on record The Kinks aren`t Metal , so there you go ! Also I`m a bit fond of a bit of Doom Metal , so that will be put in my list For this thread is Metal is it not ? And you not see any GNR Kiss , Bon Jovi or any other scarf make up perm headed bands as I think they are Bobbins .

Jethro Tull. A joke on the (was it) '89 grammies when Tull beat out metallica for best metal album.
I got some doom in my list.
