Thanks The End for setting this up!
If it's OK, I'll start off with the inaugural post. For the folks that write their own tunes, do you think you are influenced by the Beatles style of writing? Since they wrote in so many styles, how so?

Being such a big fan I guess their music is a huge influence on my music, although I don't think it comes always across. However, I have written a few songs with a deliberate nod to The Beatles - this one for example (please excuse the rough vocal, I never got round to recording it properly!):

When I write, I'm always concious of the range of the melody (1 octave or more ... that's Paul; half an octave ... that's John), and also whenever I put in a minor 4th chord I think of John.
Probably even more Beatley about the songs I write, is that they are all very structured, not open ended jams. So, excluding songs like Revolution #9. I think of the classic Verse 1, Verse 2, Chorus, Verse 3, Maybe another chorus/verse, end. I know The Beatles didn't make that up, but in my limited musical world view that genre of song belongs to them!
And sometimes when I'm in a rut I tell myself to "pull a John", which means to do something unexpected in the song: add a chord out or key, add an extra beat to a measure, change the time sig for a few beats, etc. Sometimes that's enough to make me feel creative again!

Don't forget the middle 8! Yes, I never know whether to call it the "Chorus" (which the guys I play with now call it), or "The Middle Eight", which I like to call it. Even if it's Nine! Speaking of which - I've modified my post above about Beatles influencing writing styles ... sometimes when I'm in a rut I tell myself to "pull a John", which means to do something unexpected in the song: add a chord out or key, add an extra beat to a measure, change the time sig for a few beats, etc. Sometimes that's enough to make me feel creative again!
