I was in a charity shop the other day and saw a copy of the Hollies version of 'If I needed someone'. That really must have past me by in the 60's, so I looked it up and there at least 10 versions here on this link, perhaps there are more. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_I_Needed_Someone

Well let's give a listen shall we. The guitar sounds a little tinny to me and the drums too overpowering, otherwise the vocals aren't that bad.

Rarely do I find a better version done by other bands, except Joe Cockers version of "With A Little Help From My Friends".

I think I saw Alan Clark being interviewed once saying they regretted doing If I Needed Someone.
Cockers With A Little Help From My Friends is so the best Beatles cover ever. It is, of course, a complete re-write of the song and bears little resemblance to the original musically. I never tire of hearing it. It sends shivers down my spine!!

I agree with MrM, the thing that sets 'With A Little Help From My Friends' apart from other Beatle covers is the fact it's a total reworking of the original whereas the Hollies one is more or less a straight copy. Some of the Motown artistes versions of Beatle songs are good because they play about with them, speed them up or slow them down, in effect they put their own mark on them and make them their own, otherwise I don't see the point.

Geoff Lloyd (Beatles Brunch Absolute 60's every Sunday morning from 10 - 12 GMT) plays some amazing Beatles covers. Some of the best are soul covers.

The only thing the same between Beatles' and Cocker's versions are the chords. It's admirable most of the time to make the song your own although sometimes imitation is appropriate too.
One of my favorite covers is YES doing 'Every Little Thing'.

Love Yes's Every Little Thing! In many ways it's similar to Cockers With A Little Help From My Friends in terms of total deconstruction of the source material and creating something totally unique but somehow sympathetic to the original song.

A bit like when Vanilla Fudge did the Supremes 'You keep me hanging on' which was excellent.

Inspired choice of cover!

Yes, If I Needed Someone is really difficult to pull off.

The Beans are an excellent cover band. I've put them up before for their Rooftop concert. Here a sniglet.....
