Just to give you an idea of the next Beatle Forum meetup in The Netherlands. LOL.
I think all Beatles landmarks are collected in here. Absolutely worth a visit!
1. In June 1964 the Beatles (with Jimmy Nichol instead of Ringo) came to Holland. They performed in a little village called Blokker, which is only a few miles away from where I live. There is statue across the street reminding of that great few days. At first, Ringo was on the statue, but as it was in fact Jimmy Nichol who played there, he was replaced. I believe this is a picture of Jimmy's son coming to Blokker to unveil the new statue a few years ago.
The hall is still there as well.
2. There was a television performance at Treslong Studio's in Hillegom, 60 miles or so away from here.
It became a bit chaotic at the end, as the audience went dancing in between The Beatles. The song was mimed, so as John, George and Paul ran off, the music kept going. Jimmy stayed behind his drums, doing what he was asked to do as if he wanted to fullfill every single moment as a Beatle. Treslong Studio was demolished in June 2005 so we don't need to go there.
3. At Schiphol Airport, The Beatles were interviewed. Embarrassing. The interview was done by a guy called Berend Boudewijn. He was asked to translate questions from the audience and because he had visited a Theatre School in England, he was expected to do that properly and with some wit. Silly questions were quite common those days and the Dutch audience didn't do much better. One girl (later to become a tv presenter in her own right) asked who would mend their socks when they were on tour. Duh. Although the word 'socks' is almost the same in Dutch, Berend Boudewijn translated this as 'Who mends your stockings'. Good grief.
4. On their way to Hamburg in August 1960, The Beatles stopped at Oosterbeek (near Arnhem) at the War Cemitary (sp?).
.
It's still there.
5. Also in Arnhem, John nicked a mouth organ at Bergmann's Music Shop.
The instrument he stole here was later used in the early Beatles songs. The shop went broke and had to close down in September 2013 after 99 years of existence. Around 1980 or so, a Dutch radio team made a documentary on The Beatles visits to Holland. They went to Bergmann to pay for the mouth organ John once took here. I'm not sure if the shop is still there. I'll check Google Maps.
6. In Amsterdam they did a canal trip and stayed at the Doelen Hotel, then and now a very exclusive place to stay (you can go cheaper if you want to.)
So, some wonderful place to visit! Hehe.
