Rocky, that is, indeed, the Indra. Although the backdrop is similar to that of the Top Ten club, there are differences. Note the dark section in the Top Ten pics [behind Pete], also the lack of a piano. I'm not sure, but I think the Indra may not have had a raised stage, whereas the TT certainly did. Pete didn't have time to outfit himself with a snazzy lilac jacket, so wore a blue Italian jacket. Eventually, all their jackets disintegrated from the hours on stage. They first bought houndstooth bombers, then went for the leathers, and never looked back.

I also read the whereabouts of the guitar Paul had. He dropped it one day and they all proceded to jump on it! Goodbye Rosetti Solid 7! Probably would be worth six figures today!! lol

Having read about the Top Ten club for many years, you are lead to believe that it was a much more salubrious venue compared to the Indra which, by all accounts, was the absolute pits. Judging by these photos they don't look much different!

The Indra was at the dark end of the Grosse Feiheit, whereas the Top Ten was on the main Reeperbahn, thus attracting much more passing trade. I've never been in either club, but the opinion seems to be that Peter Eckhorn was a much better businessman than Bruno Koschmeider, treated the groups better, and generally ran a better venue. The Top Ten had been a Hippodrome in the past, so probably had more amenities than the Indra.

Their clothes took a lot of abuse, heat, sweat, jumping around, as did their guitars.

The Top Ten had accomodation above it. So that made it better thn the Indra and Kaiserkeller were The Beatles had to use the Bambi Kino.

In terms of a live music venue which was the best out of the Indra, Kaisekeller, Top Ten and Star Club? By 'best' I mean biggest for audience capacity and proper stage - not a bit of floor area.

Not really sure, but The Star Club held around 2-3 thousand and had a real stage.

I agree, from everything I've heard, the Star Club was the best in Hamburg, and from what I saw was better than anything in Liverpool city centre, with the exception of the Empire [which wasn't a rock venue]

Not really sure, but The Star Club held around 2-3 thousand and had a real stage. Wow! The Star club was a massive step up for them then. The photos you posted from your trip to Hamburg a year or so ago (of The Kaisekeller I think) looked like it would only hold about a hundred.

It can hold a few hundred easy (Kaiserkeller)
I was surprised by how small it was as you imagine it to be huge. Great atmosphere there though even when you are alone in there.
The Indra looks smaller than the Kaiserkeller. No idea about the Top Ten.

The Kaiserkeller is very popular with young people who listen to Goth music there.
The Indra looked closed, but I am told it opens sometimes.
Top Ten sells Pizza.
Bambi Kino has a guy who comes out and tuts at you when you take a photo ha ha.

Here's something I didn't know. They tore down the Star Club a couple of years ago!

A friend gave me this program from a Star Club event in Kiel... Top of the bill was Little Richard, and in his backing group was one James Marshall Hendrix!

Nice little collectable Brew! Also in Little Richard's group back at the Star Club was Billy Preston. And probably the first time the Beatles bumped into him. Although they met Little Richard about a month before in Liverpool. Ever see this LP? Although the LP is really songs he recorded when he got back to America in 1965. A liberty record companies would do to sell their records back then. Jimi's CD release came way later when the Star Club become famous.

I have the Star Club book which has a lot of info on the recordings. They had some great talent over there back in the day.
