I've upgraded my home audio system with a new amplifier and state of the art speakers and for some unexplained and slightly bizarre reason, I've listened to this song on repeat for almost an hour now. I'm familiar with how the official recording was produced and released both as a single and as the first track on 'Anthology 1'. I'm also aware of the 'availability' of an enhanced version of the song. Of course, Jeff Lynne produced the song - and it shows. I'm not saying it's a bad production but it does have his hallmarks all over it. George Martin refused to have anything to do with it because his hearing was becoming impaired and he felt that he couldn't do justice to such an important project. I've often wondered how the finished track would have sounded had Martin produced it.
Now then, with the advent of audio editing/mixing software and potential wannabee producers, I'm quite certain that there's lots of people out there who have at least attempted to remix the song to produce a 'cleaner/fuller' sound. Something akin to how George Martin might have produced it. I know the main stumbling block would be the fact that John's vocals and piano were lifted from a home demo he recorded in 1977. I also know that you 'can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear'.
So, have any of you good Beatle people heard, or are aware of, any alternative versions or maybe even you've had a go yourself at being a producer for a day or whatever? If so, I would love to hear them.
