You know, those albums that are revered in Mojo and Rolling Stone and can't think why? Of course it's all opinion.
EXILE ON MAIN STREET. It's NOT one of the greatest double albums ever, let alone one of the greatest albums ever! Sticky Fingers was great in it's sheer variety of musical sounds and melodic (for the Stones) inventiveness. EXILE... was just a ragged dragged out, filler plagued, bloated garage rock and roll album that is actually quite boring. This is an example of where you could cut half the songs and take the 'classics' that are on there and make a killer single album.
In My Opinion.
OK. Your turn: What album do YOU think is over rated?

Great thread ! You are spot on in every detail of Exile On Main Street . It is a terrible album . And you get double L.P of the dross . I love The Stones don`t get me wrong , but Exile is just poor . Did The Stones even make a Classic album ? Sticky Fingers is the only one that is worthy of being called a classic . Brown Sugar . Wild Horse`s and the brilliant Can`t You Hear Me Knocking . But I do love Let It Bleed and I would say it`s my Fav . That`s it . See Exile was the topic and I stared talkin about other albums . Thast`s how bad it is . I have a sacred album even higher esteemed the Exile . Pet Sounds Oh yes ! I can hear the villagers going to the sheds and getting out the Pitchforks and setting off the touches . It`s poor , and should know I have it ! The longest running song is 3.12 . I just was`nt made for these times . Yep . I know what your sayin . Never heard of it . You have God Only Knows , 2 minutes odd and Sloop John B , 2 mins odd Apart from that five minutes the rest is utter rubbish and as that other song you have never heard of I bet your bottom dollar you wont have heard of any of the others . Doe`s that matter ? I here you say . It say`s it all when after almost 50 years of air play that you hav`nt heard them , I think it does . If I`d been around in 66 and bought Revolver then gone out to buy P. Sounds , I would thrown P. S. in the bin . Who the hell do know has this in their top ten ? Exactly . The Beach Boy`s supposed to have given the Beatles a run for their money ! Singles maybe. But if P. Sounds is their best no wonder Wilson had a melt down when he heard Pepper . It`s Bobbins .

Got to agree with you on both points. Pet Sounds just doesn't deserve the acclaim in my view. I was so disappointed when I first heard it as I had expected great things.
I don't believe The Stones have made a classic album. Sure, great individual songs (Midnight Rambler, Gimmie Shelter, Sympathy for the Devil, Wild Horses). Mick Taylor - the best guitar player the Stones ever had by a long, long way.
I have to say Night At The Opera is somewhat overrated and in many ways Queen are a little like the Stones; great individual songs but not one truly classic album.

Amadeus, with situations like this, it's always about personal tastes and opinions. I do agree with you though about Exile On Main Street. It's not very well produced (in fact it's messy) and it sounds as if it's been cobbled together without much thought to the finished article. To me, it's too 'loose' and it makes for uneasy listening. I'm a big fan of the Rolling Stones but with Exile On Main Street I just don't get why it's so hyped up and critically acclaimed.
Anyway, my own contender for one of these 'sacred' album is U2 - The Joshua Tree. I have to say here and now that I've never liked U2. Their songs sound 'samey' and as far as I'm concerned, Bono can't sing to save his life. He's one dimensional and his voice bores the hell out of me. Bono is a prize arsehole too. That's not to say that arseholes can't make exceptional music. Occasionally, Lennon came into that category. Enough said.
Rolling Stone said of the 'critically acclaimed' The Joshua Tree 'for the most part this is an album that turns spiritual quests and political struggles into uplifting stadium singalongs: See hits like "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," a rock anthem with a gospel soul.' Absolute garbage! The words 'spiritual' and 'political struggles' aren't something I hear in this album. I hear 'boring' and 'monotonous'. I could go on but I won't. I would rather listen to No Jacket Required by Phil Collins. Now then, erm . . . . . . .

Oh ! Eggy ! No defending of Pet Sounds ! I thought I was in for some stick off you ! I love U2 . Joshua Tree is a great album but not in a critical acclaimed great album . Achtung Baby is a far better album U2 and REM got me through the god awful 80`s , so I guess if you look at it in my mind , was there anyone else worth listening too ? Apart from Graceland , Final Cut and maybe Remain In Light is their any good albums that came out of that decade ? Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree stand out for me with Document as the best of that very bad decade .I.M.O And Bono ! Don`t get me started on Phil Collins !

Now ANYTHING by REM is overrated in my book. In fact, they are surely a candidate for the most overrated band ever!
Do you think if Macca hadn't of mentioned Pet Sounds as an influence it would still be so highly regarded? Just a thought!

Hmmm,,,,,,, Very interesting. We all seem to have the same thoughts on EXILE. But the other choices are interesting: REM? U2? Pet Sounds?
I like Pet Sounds. I like The Beach Boys. I like REM and I like U2. One of my favorite groups.
I agree that Queen have hit and miss albums. I prefer a Queen 'mix tape'. And G&R? Never liked them.
SO,,,,, if we all agree about EXILE,,,,where are all the people who place it near the top of the heap?
My next choice: IMAGINE. If, say, Barry McGuire or Arthur Lee had put this record out, would it have made the same sort of waves? The whole album (or most of it) hangs on the ever so slightest of melodic hooks. It's pleasant enough but not worth the worship that Lennon disciples give it. ...Soldier.... in particular is a very boring dirge. 'Imagine' itself,,,,,, I don't know. I like 'Sleep', 'Truth' and 'Oh Yoko' but I tend to avoid that album as a whole. I always gravitate to PLASTIC ONO BAND, WALLS AND BRIDGES (although it has similar problems) and ROCK AND ROLL.
So let's have it. IMAGINE?

Imagine !Well . I do think that Plastic Ono Band is one of the greatest albums ever and do we see it in acclaimed lists ? No . Imagine is a more "Easier to the ear" album is the best way I can put it . Imagine the song . Gotta be one of the finest songs ever written ? I think so . Not a bad start . Crippled Inside . God I love this song . And we get George as well ! You have to remember folks I was a teenager when I heard this (14 ish)and with Lennon becoming a bit of a God like person in my eyes . As I got a bit anti establishment in my later teens , this song meant more on another level "You can go to Church and sing a Hymn " Suits and ties. For a very long time in my life I have never trusted anyone in a suit . One thing you can`t hide is when your crippled inside . Jealous Guy . Come on , this a song that never gets tiring and did`nt Lennon come up with the tune in India , this could of been on the White Album . Can`t get better than that for a album filler . It`s So Hard . Almost has an Instant Karma fell to it and maybe his Rock n Roll roots and those strings ! I Don`t Wanna Be A Soldier . Again I another song I love and who the hell want`s to be Soldier ? Not me . Gimme Me Some Truth . Angry Lennon ! I like Lennon when he`s angry . Not short haired yellow belly son of Dickie ... Again Anti ! And George`s Solo ! Oh My Love . God damn beautiful song . Lennon bearing his sole is a joy . almost an In My Life answer to himself . (kinda) How Do You Sleep ? Brilliant . Who else could have a go at Macca , the only person who was the other half of the greatest song writing team in musical history that who . George seems to play that guitar with Gusto ! How ? Another brilliant song where Lennon bears his sole . It`s a simple song , but hell this has gotta be one song that never gets credit where it deserves . Oh Yoko ! This song for some strange reason gets a lot of airplay on my local radio . Listening to this at work really sounds fantastic and a great foot tapper . So yeh , I think Imagine is a worthy acclaimed album .

Oh Kitey!
I don't need to defend 'Pet Sounds'. The music speaks for itself.
Brian Wilson was influenced by 'Rubber Soul' and 'Pepper' was influenced by 'Pet Sounds'. Those facts have been widely reported by the media.
'Plastic Ono Band' has, in fact been very critically acclaimed.
And if U2 and R.E.M. got you through the eighties, then you naively must have found them (the eighties) musically deficient. There was actually some decent music produced during that particular decade.
What's wrong with Phil Collins?

Does anyone believe there was a Paul McCartney effect on Pet Sounds? I.e. Paul saying it was an influence on Pepper?

Pet Sounds had a song called "Here Today." Never mind that Paul recycled the title several decades later. In the Pet Sounds "Here Today" instrumental break there is a chord progression similar to the one on "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite." Also, "Here Today" has a bass guitar fretted high up and neck, like Paul did on "With a Little Help From My Friends." The Pet Sounds title cut featured a guitar played through a Leslie speaker, like George on "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."
Outside of that, "I'm Waiting for the Day" has a background vocal similar to that on "All You Need is Love." "God Only Knows" has a rhythmic feel like "Penny Lane."
Brian Wilson was a high school (American) football player. McCartney once owned the publishing rights to Wilson's high school fight song.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
By way of explanation, Wilson's HS called their fight song "On You Cougars." It was really "On Wisconsin," which McCartney owned the publishing rights to until the state of Wisconsin badgered him (sorry about that) to give it to them. A mildly hokey Beach Boys song, "Be True to Your School," contained a phrase of "On Wisconsin" played on the organ in the instrumental break.

I agree with what you are saying Henry J. My question is; the fact Paul stated that Pet Sounds was a major influence on him and therefore Pepper, did that have any bearing on sacredness of 'Pet Sounds'?
While we are at it, was Smile better than Pet Sounds? Or should I say potentially better?

I don't know if Paul's statement had any bearing. The album did WAY better in the UK than it did over here in '66. I think people did like it at the time. It was different in melody style and instrumentation etc.....
Would Smile have been better? No. Just different. Two completely different animals.

I only say this because I read so much about how great Pet Sounds was before I actually heard it. When I did hear it I just didn't feel it lived up to the talk. I also thought the production was very 'Spectorized' with a wall of sound.

Yes Eggy the music doe`s speak for it`s self . Rubbish (God Only and Sloop John B not included)
Yes henry . You can say that almost every song has an influence and any song since Rock Around The Clock . Rock Music after all can be played with just three chords for the most part .
You could say that Zeppelin`s entire career is ripping off Robert Johnson . Radiohead - Pink Floyd . Everybody in Music has an influence , it doe`s nt mean to see they have their own style . Can`t see Robert Johnson singing about hedgerows bustling ? I think the only way McCartney got influenced by Pet Sounds is that the Fab 4 could blow it out of the water . Which they did ..And Some . Anyone have Pet Sounds in their top ten ? . Honestly ( Eggy , not included in that question )
80`s Music . It was dire . Some one please tell me an album that is worth it`s salt today . Anyone have an 80`s album in their top ten fav albums ?
Come on ! I need to know that , The Who , Floyd , Yes , Macca , Neil Young , Dylan , Mitchell bettered their early 70`s stuff ?
Give me an 80`s album .

Another vote for Hounds of Love.
On a personal taste level
Closer Joy Division. The Stone Roses By the Stone Roses A Walk Across the Rooftops The Blue Nile. (to be fair I have not heard it in years so it might not stand up)
