It's a shame it doesn't stay in the family!

True. But when you think about it, the money is just too much to pass up. I just wish John would have gave him the blue strat, then we would know where it's at today.

Rock thank you for that. I am really puzzled by something. I would imagine that musicians have a real love of the instruments they play but many seem to part very easily with them. Is it that they have their special ones and the ones we see them play on tour are different so less worry about damage.
I get selling stage wear and to some extent the gold discs but guitars seem so personal.

Most of your great guitar players are collectors, but a few, like Clapton, have no real attachment to their guitars and put them up for charity auctions.

[/quote] Hey Rocky, you know I hate to correct people!! I have to take you to task on your Eric Clapton comment. Clapton does indeed auction off a lot of his guitars however they are usually for his Crossroads charity which is a charity he set up in Antigua for addicts (drugs or drink). The guitars he is most attached to he ends up buying back himself at auction.

A_HAAAA!!!!!! You just said that you hate to corr.....aw, never mind.
I never knew that Clapton buys them back. Did he get 'brownie' back? Does he still have 'blackie'?
Pete Townshend owns hundreds of guitars but none of them work, except for the one he has to use tonight at the concert.
And me, I've never got rid of ONE guitar. I got rid of a troublesome VOX amp and it nearly did me in!

He definitely bought 'Blackie' back at an auction. I can't confirm he brought 'brownie' back.
I'm taking a leap here but I doubt you have owned as many guitars as Clapton. So there's bound to be some he doesn't have affection for and others he does. I have kept all my guitars too. Well there was a dodgy Kay I sold for £16 and an Ibanez as I gave to my nephew. However there is a good chance that part of our affection for our guitars is that we don't have the same disposable income as Clapton and choose our guitars wisely. Clapton (like Townshend et al) would run into guitar shops and take them off the wall without even trying them. I'm pretty certain there have been a few regretted purchases.

'Brownie' is at the Seattle EMP Musuem run by Paul Allen owner of the Hendrix 'Woodstock' strat, which is also on display there. 'Blackie' is owned by the Guitar Center chain. Clapton may still have a connection with 'Brownie'.(?) Eric was probably the originator of the 'buying strats and giving them to your friends idea.'
Which brings me to this question, do you know of anyone else that gave away more guitars than Eric? I know George gave away a few.
a little tune while you're thinking....

mrm I couldn't find anywhere where Eric bought 'Blackie' back. Are you maybe confusing it with Gilmour's 'Blackie' which he gave to the Hard Rock Café and then years later went back and retrived it? Also Eric got the first Fender 'Blackie' replica made and what did he do, he sold it! So I'll stand by earlier statement that Eric doesn't give a crap about 'collecting' guitars, they're just tools of work. Another musician is Eric Johnson. He spent all those years hunting for his stolen strat, finds it, and what does he do, he sells it!! Must be something in their first names. lol

mrm, he says he's not a collector and I believe him. On the 'all choked up' part about selling them. Probably had about the same feeling as you and I had when we sold our first car. It's gone, but we had fun with it.lol
*btw I love the part "I bought a couple of guitars on ebay". Eric is just like us!

The point I was making was that he clearly does have affection for a lot of his guitars. I will check out what it says in his biography.

Welcome to the Forum tracksauction and good luck with your upcoming auction. I wasn't even aware that Rod's banjo was up for auction. I emailed him a few years ago and he told me he was considering it for sale but now I see he finally put it up. Good luck to both you and Rod in that sale. It's a very historic instrument. www.tracksauction.com/rod-davis-quarrymen-windsor-whirle-victor-supremus-banjo/
