Pothos, there's a busker who plays the guitar and sings Beatles numbers, at the end of the street, by the John Lennon statue, and he's drowned out by the randon tunes from the bars. And this is in the afternoon.... it must be outrageous of a weekend night!

I walkd through Mathew Street this afternoon, and the other prominent nuisance was the number of tramps lying about in the doorways. I haven't seen the word "tramp" used in a long time. In north Louisiana we used to use it interchangeably with "hobo" and "bum." Nowadays it's the more politically correct "homeless person." Or were you using it to mean "prostitute?"

I meant beggars/druggies who lie about in doorways, often with a dog

Good episode of On the Beat with Spencer Leigh interviewing Brian Griffiths, and also the producer of the forthcoming documentary on The Big Three.

Another episode of On the Beat with Spencer interviewing Frank Ifield, then Gerry Marsden. Listening to those Frank Ifield records made me even more thanful for the Beatles. How dire British pop was before they hit the recording scene. And what a close call it was. They could so easily have been encouraged to release "How Do You Do It" and the same blandwagon would have rolled on.

Nice interview with Mr. Roberts. (Thx Brew) Starts at 25:00. And he said he had that first disc by the Quarrymen for about three months and passed it on. Everyone would have it for a few months. I may have to purchase his book sounds interesting. Next week he has Colin Hanton (drummer for the Quarrymen) scheduled to come on who also has a book out.

There is a nice story about that guitar in 'Beatles Gear' page 95-96. George only had the guitar a couple of months. July & Aug. 1963. I found a very rare photograph of George using it. It's a very rare guitar, in it's own right, as not too many were made.

Article about the famed Jacaranda Club here
For anyone coming to Beatles Week, looks like a good place to drop in.

I was in town yesterday, and fancied a plate of egg & chips, a meal I haven't had for years. Where else but the Beatles Cafe for such a feed. I used to be a regular at the other cafe in Cavern Walks, "Lucy in the Sky", which was adorned with album covers, photos and other memorabilia. Sadly it closed a few years back, due to the drop in business within the Cavern Walks complex. Yesterday the place was almost deserted, with several shop units empty. There were only a couple of other customers in the Beatles Cafe, which was a pity because the food was good, the service cheerful, and the background music- Beatles of course- great. Anyone who visits Liverpool should pop in for a brew and a snack.

I wonder if the rise of the internet has had a negative effect on music in ways we are only seeing now. As a kid you not only heard you favourite pop act on top of the pops but country, metal, disco and many other genres all on prime time tv that had millions of viewers. I read a wide range of pop magazines and thank to that even if I did not like or understand music from other genres and generations I at least heard them. Now music seems segregated. The singles chart is irrelevant and no one is prepared to invest their time in listening to music outside their comfort zone. The biggest shock was when Paul worked with Rhiannon and Kanye West and no one seemed to know who he was.
I hope I am wrong.

I think you are right, Pothos. I saw a contestant on Eggheads quiz who didn't know that the genre of Gerry/Pacemakers and the Searchers was Merseybeat.

I was chatting to a friend who works in Mathew Street, and he told me that on Friday night an American tourist remarked that he loved Liverpool and the Beatles, but in walking halfway along the street had been offered drugs four times, and been asked for money by tramps six times.
