Pretend you are a vice-president at Capitol or Parlophone and it’s time to milk the cash cow that is the Beatles’ catalog. We need to re-release Beatle material in a different package. Suppose you come up with the idea of 4 CDs, one each featuring John, Paul, George and Ringo. Let’s say you are assigned the task of assembling the George collection. Let’s also say the CD will be the length of a Parlophone Beatle album, with 14 cuts. What 14 George-songs would you put on the CD/LP/whatever-medium? Here’s what I would have: 1. Don’t Bother Me 2. Roll Over Beethoven 3. I Need You 4. If I Needed Someone 5. I Want to Tell You 6. Taxman 7. Within You Without You 8. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 9. Savoy Truffle 10. Piggies 11. I Me Mine 12. For You Blue 13. Something 14. Here Comes the Sun
More or less in order of release. All are George-written except for “Beethoven.” I might be tempted to replace that cut with “It’s All Too Much,” but I want to show off George’s Chuck Berry licks. There was a period from 1966-68 where George was writing less-accessible songs, so these were omitted except for “Within You Without You,” which actually grows on you if you listen to it.
But that’s what I would do

OK then, I'll play!
I've included in my list only those songs specifically written by George which is why I've left out 'Roll Over Beethoven' There are 22 songs to choose from so it boiled down to omitting 8 songs that I feel wouldn't make the cut. I've gone for personal preference and also songs that I think would appeal to punters not familiar with The Beatles music. I have to say that it was difficult to choose what songs were included although a fair percentage would pick themselves - 'Something', 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Here Comes The Sun' and 'Taxman' to name but 4. I've also included the years that the songs appeared on a Beatles album which is interesting not least because it indicates when he became more prolific in his writing. Also interesting, no songs from 1964. And not too dissimilar to your own choices HJ.
Here they are then :
01 Don’t Bother Me (1963) 02 You Like Me Too Much (1965) 03 If I Needed Someone (1965) 04 Taxman (1966) 05 I Want To Tell You (1966) 06 Within You Without You (1967) 07 Blue Jay Way (1967) 08 While My Guitar Gently Weeps (1968) 09 Savoy Truffle (1968) 10 Only A Northern Song (1969) 11 Old Brown Shoe (1969) 12 Something (1969) 13 Here Comes The Sun (1969) 14 I Me Mine (1970)

Hey Arthurlee, I had forgotten all bout "Old Brown Shoe" or else I would have included it instead of "Roll Over Beethoven." I was going by albums, and it was originally released only as the B-side of "Ballad of John and Yoko," IIRC.

But over here in America you know what those Capitol genius' would do would be release all the songs on a double LP/CD and then charge you double!! lol (It all boils down to capitalism.)

Rocky, you're probably right. But if those 22 songs average less that 3 minutes and about 20 seconds each, then they could all fit on one CD, given the 75 or 76 minutes CDs can hold.

Well then, here's the 22 songs (in alphabetical order) with their time durations. You may be surprised to find that all the songs have a total running time of 68 minutes and 6 seconds. They would easily fit onto a standard single CD but knowing the greed of the corporate music industry, they would almost certainly release this as a double CD and, as you said Rocky, charge double! I can't believe I've just done this (maybe this post would sit comfortably in the 'You Know You're Addicted To The Beatles When ... .')!! Anyway, here’s the track listings of ‘The George Collection’ Blue Jay Way 3.54 Don't Bother Me 2:29 For You Blue 2.30 Here Comes The Sun 3.05 I Me Mine 2.25 I Need You 2.28 I Want To Tell You 2.26 If I Needed Someone 2.21 It's All Too Much 6.24 Long, Long, Long 3.03 Love You To 2.58 Old Brown Shoe 3.17 Only A Northern Song 3.23 Piggies 2.04 Savoy Truffle 2.54 Something 3.00 Taxman 2.37 The Inner Light 2.35 Think For Yourself 2.18 While My Guitar Gently Weeps 4.45 Within You Without You 5.05 You Like Me Too Much 2.35

Cool, Arthurlee! You even totaled them up!
If they did a 2-CD set, they could do the covers and Lennon-McCartney songs as well.

'Not Guilty' was never released or included on any Beatles mainstream or commercially released album. As you probably know, it was included on the 'Anthology 3' CD. It was written in 1968 by George during the 'White Album' sessions and, although The Beatles did more than 100 takes of the song, it was deemed not suitable for inclusion on the album. John didn't feature at all on the recording.

Otherwise who's gonna buy something they already have. Me. lol And probably a lot of other Beatle addicts just to complete their collections. I usually hold off on greatest hits packages, but eventually buy them just for their covers and like I said to complete my collection.

Ya, I used to be like that, I know how you (we all) feel. I finally decided to sell all my beautiful junk, and just keep the basics. It started when I bought the 2014 US CD set, and was thankfully able to cancel the order on Amazon the next day. I didn't sleep all night asking myself why I bought it, when I already have the 2009 remaster set, and the 2 Capitol volume sets. Especially since I have all this and more on my iTunes, and I just don't play CDs anymore, so thankfully I was able to sell a lot of my stuff. Now all I own is the original UK LPs, Blu Rays and a few toys. Selling all those CD's & DVD's helped me pay for those original UK LP's. The way I look at it, that's all the Beatles ever put out, the rest of the crap is a cash cow from Apple. But that's just me, more power to people to buy whatever they want!

You're right, it starts to get out of hand. I think it all started when they brought out that first lp. They had a couple of singles off of it already that you had and put a few songs that you really wanted onto it so you had to buy the lp. They had us hooked from the beginning and they knew it. lol

Hey, geezer that I am, I remember when singles (the 7" vinyl 45rpm records) were all mono, and if you wanted to hear the sound in full-dimensional stereo, you had to buy the album. And the singles came out first, then the album. Since the '70s, the album usually comes out first.

As much as I hated the Capitol LPs, at least they put the singles on the albums, so you didn't have to buy both, but since the youngin's could only afford singles anyways, I guess it didn't matter. Rocky, I was hoping to get an arousal out of you when I showed the guitar pic, in case you thought I was throwin' a dig at you because of all yours.... ;o)
Forget this Harrison CD, now we gotta look at these new 2014 mono record releases @ $400....
