After reading the article linked above, I would suggest that James McGrath started from the position that there was great influence on the Beatles' music from Black Liverpudlians, then tried to find evidence. The article clearly shows that all of the main first-hand commentators, such as Bill Harry and Bob Wooller completely denied such influence. It is true that "Lord Woodbine" was involved with Alan Williams, and was part of the Hamburg endeavour, so that could be seen as significant. Musically, however there was virtually no influence on the Beatles from local Black musicians. This is mainly because that scene was not the type of music that interested the Beatles. There was, of course, a massive influence from the American Black music scene, and this video, featuring Mark Lewisohn explores this in depth.
