HIGHLY recommend this 60's band from Texas. Very interesting and sad story behind the group, specifically the lead singer Roky (pronounced Rocky) Erickson. I personally think their 2nd album, Easter Everywhere, is the best However, you cannot miss with their first album, 1966's The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. Oh yeah, they pioneered the Electric Jug.

That opening scene of High Fidelity gets me every time - John Cusack cranks the volume up, the stylus meets vinyl and "You're Gonna Miss Me" blasts the speakers. In my opinion one of the strongest opening scenes I've seen!!

By the way, I only have a few tracks by them - any chance of upping a few here?

Ah yes the 13 Floor Elevators I had read for years that this was one of the best Psychedelic albums ever made it a masterpiece etc etc , i have wondered though record shops for years looking for it and then 3 years ago i think it was it was there in a shop!.. a fiver ! and tells my mate whos with me "you got to buy this is a masterpiece etc etc by he powers that be and we both bought hey ! a fiver . i gets it home and put it on and sat there waiting for something Psychedelic to happen the first track just sounded like a very bad recorded garage band ,well in a garage , anyway the next track it must be psychedelic but yeh it sounded exactly as the first and just as the first it sounded like it been recorded etc etc .. I looked at the cover so Psychedelic its cosmic but the music from the cd ,i even thought it had the wrong one in , it just sounded like a very below average guitar band , but that was my opinion. The next day the phone rang ,its my mate and i got "whats this piece of crap you talked me into buying etc etc .. Well i must admit i have heard more Psychdelia on the play school song than this album ...through the round window .. Yep ,if anyone whats my copy they are welcome to it . 13 Floor Elevators i should have got off on the first track . Sorry not my cup of tea .

13th Floor is sooo good. Some people dont get it cuz it is so raw, but I cannot disagree that it doesnt completely psych, but does contain some elements. But seriously, the Elevators are one of the best bands to never make it. Easter Everywhere is a masterpiece! Experts rank the Elevators among the best garage bands ever! But heym some people have a more commercial taste in music and some wanna hear the more underground sounds of the time. If that sounds like you, you will love these guys!

No i love 60s music but this for me was a no no Oh well I really didnt mean to suggest that you only had ears for commercial music, I was just saying some people do. Anyway, bands like the Seeds, the Human Expression, and 13th floor elevators are in the Garage Punk genre so it takes a certain acquired taste to like them. I am telling you tho, they are soo great!! I think one day you might find yourself going "AHA!! I get it now!!" Or maybe not LOL!! Did you try listening to Easter Everywhere yet!? You may enjoy that album a bit better than Psychedelic Sounds.

Thought I'd post the AMG biog of the band to supplement the ongoing 'debate' although I know it won't sway anyone's taste for them. It's interesting though :
Biography by Richie Unterberger Featuring the yelping vocals and visionary, occasionally demented lyrics of Roky Erickson, the 13th Floor Elevators were one of the original acid rock bands. Formed in Texas in the mid-'60s, the Elevators started as a garage rock outfit, scoring their one and only modest national hit with "You're Gonna Miss Me." While Erickson's loopy persona and Tommy Hall's odd "jug" percussion were the band's most distinguishing features, several members of the group's original lineup contributed strong material to their albums. Although these inconsistent efforts sometimes wander off into a cloudy haze, they also include sturdy folk-rock tunes and driving psychedelic rockers. Trips to San Francisco established the group as an up-and-coming underground favorite, but Erickson's problems with drugs and the police led to the singer's commission to a state mental hospital in the late '60s, an ordeal from which he has never fully recovered. The band was really only at full power for a couple of albums, although all of their releases for the legendary International Artists label — produced by, of all people, Kenny Rogers' brother Leland — are revered among psychedelic collectors. Live recordings and outtakes of the Elevators continue to surface, though a cogent domestic compilation of the best of these erratic pioneers' work remains overdue.

They really are great! Oh yeah and I love Arthur Lee and Love! Forever Changes is my favorite! On a related note, has anyone ever heard Del Shannons - The Further Adventures of Charles Westover 1967?? OMG! If you have not, you must immediately! I can up it if there is an interest.

I'd like to hear that Del Shannon track! I listened to the album last night - there are some great stand-out tracks, and some not so great (Monkey Island!). What spoils things a little for me, is that weird tapping noise - could that be the "jug percussion" - if so, it is well over used in my opinion. But overall, I'd certainly be pleased to get if for a fiver!!

Yeah the "Electric Jug" was used on the recordings I liken it to the sound of the dog on Nintendos Duck Hunt. IDK, but I like it! Its quite psychedelic if you are on psychedelics! LMAO!
But yeah, I will up Del Shannons Pysch album. I am sure you all will be pleasantly surprise by that one!! Its definitely Psych as well! So all you Psycho's get ready!!
