I was browsing around eBay tonight looking at Beatles music and I noticed a few observations that I would like to share with you.
If the US albums were not butchered enough, it's a good thing that the band paid no mind to cassette and 8-track releases of their albums. Most of them that I've seen tonight have some of the oddest track listings I've ever seen.
8-tracks (properly known as Stereo 8) for just about any artist or album were almost guaranteed to have a different track listing than the vinyl copy of the respective album, unless it was a live album. I don't exactly know how 8-tracks worked nor do I know the significance of the 4 "programs" of an 8-track, but I do know that when you put one into the player, it plays from start to finish... no fast-forwarding or rewinding.
It seems if you bought a cassette version of a Beatles album in the US, it was the same as the vinyl copy (with the exception of the Hey Jude album, which reversed the sides). In the UK, that was different story. There, you were lucky to have one or two tracks in their proper place on the album... and it was usually the last one. It's also worth noting that all of the cassette copies of Abbey Road have Come Together and Here Comes The Sun on opposite sides.
Here are some 8-track listings I've found (and I will note what country it originated from):
