The second official release of The Beatles' BBC radio recordings was released 19 years after 1994's Live At The BBC collection.
On Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2 was released in two-CD set and 180-gram vinyl versions. Both include a 48-page booklet with an introduction by Paul McCartney and liner notes by BBC producer Kevin Howlett.
The album contains 63 tracks, including 37 previously unreleased performances, and 23 excerpts of in-studio speech featuring the group and radio presenters Brian Matthew, Alan Freeman, Lee Peters and Rodney Burke.
Three songs not officially available elsewhere were included: I'm Talking About You, Beautiful Dreamer and Happy Birthday Dear Saturday Club, although the collection did contain Lend Me Your Comb, which had previously been issued on Anthology 1.
However, two other songs, A Picture Of You and Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream?), recorded with Pete Best on drums on 7 March 1962 and 11 June 1962 respectively, are still yet to be officially released in any form.
Versions of several of the included songs had previously been released on Live At The BBC, in an acknowledgement that The Beatles recorded certain songs multiple times. The group performed a total of 88 different songs in their BBC radio sessions.
In all The Beatles made 52 known musical performances on a variety of BBC radio shows between March 1962 and June 1965, in addition to many more interviews and unscheduled news appearances.
In addition to the musical performances, On Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2 includes audio of The Beatles talking to DJs Brian Matthew and Alan Freeman, and Pop Go The Beatles hosts Lee Peters and Rodney Burke, as well as interviews recorded for the Pop Profile series in November 1965 and May 1966.
The album was compiled and researched by producers Kevin Howlett and Mike Heatley, and were mastered at Abbey Road Studios by engineers Guy Massey and Alex Wharton.

I'm excited about this, and counting the days. And Kevin Howlett's new BBC Beatles book helps make me feel even more anxious about it. I loved the first BBC album, and I expect this to be just as much fun.

Great to have you back Rdnzl!! I left work early to go home and play the new Beatles BBC album only to find that Amazon haven't bloody delivered it... so, following a very stroppy email to them they can basically stuff it and I'll go buy it from HMV instead tomorrow! Having said that, I'm listening to it right now.... don't ask!

I heard a few tracks on Beatles Brunch on Sunday. It sounded great. Kevin Howlett was also getting interviewed. His book seems a MUST companion.

Yeah, the book is on MY Xmas list!
My CD didn't arrive from Amazon today (which I am mightily pissed about!) but I found it via other means! Anyway, the whole album is in the box if you wanna grab it!

Pre-ordered both BBC sets...Still haven't arrived...BUT I couldn't wait and I saw them in the store Monday (11/11/13) and I bought BBC 2 anyway, because I am impatient. I have someone in mind for a BBC 2 Christmas gift...
I gave "On Air" one complete listen, and I am pleased. I'm particularly happy to hear live in the studio versions of "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "Anna", "This Boy", "Please Mr Postman", "And I Love Her", "If I Fell", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "P.S. I Love You" and "There's A Place". The first BBC release seems to have more interesting "previously unreleased cover tunes", but IT DOESN'T MATTER MUCH TO ME....
I was slightly let down by the fact that nothing here represents the "Help!" album, as I once had a cassette of a bootleg with a BBC version of "The Night Before" (at least I think it was a BBC version).
What a happy time to love The Beatles.

I'm sure a lot of us already know...Keep your old "Live At The BBC" sets, because both have slight differences...For example: The 1994 edition doesn't have a voiceover on "From Us To You", the 2013 edition has a speech/dialog track between "Carol" & "Soldier Of Love". The 1994 "Have A Banana" speech track is altered on the 2013 edition. The 2013 edition ends with a "closing" version of "From Us To You", while the 1994 edition features "FUTY" only once. I'm sure other subtle differences exist as well.
Sound wise, I think the 2013 edition sounds slightly better.

Thanks Rdnzl - nice summary of the changes to the remastered album - I'd noticed the extra "From Us To You" but I've not played it yet, so I'm really looking forward to it! It's my Xmas album - I always play it when I'm putting the Xmas decs and tree up - been a tradition since the album originally came out! I haven't stopped playing BBC 2 yet - absolutely love it! I also ended up buying the vinyl edition as well - incidentally, it has the 4 interviews all on one side (side 6!), not that I'm ever gonna play it! LOL!

I was a bit surprised that the interview tracks are as long as they are.
I'm so happy we got this wonderful surprise release this autumn!
Give me a "new" Beatles release for every Christmas season and I'll be happy.

My two BBC CDs arrived, along with the Super Deluxe Edition of The Who's "Tommy".
Since I was too impatient I bought the 2 BBC releases from the store, but I have a buddy who can't afford to get new releases, especially this time of year...So I let him know the BBC CD's are unopened and on their way to his house as soon as the Post Office opens on Monday. He's so psyched!!!!
QUICK overview of the super deluxe TOMMY:
Nice packaging, although not even close to the Super Deluxe QUADROPHENIA. TOMMY has nothing but a poster and a reasonably good hardcover book about the creation of and sessions for TOMMY. CD 1 is the original album remastered, and nicely, I might add. "We're Not Gonna Take It" is once again a single track. My "deluxe edition" version has it as 2 tracks ("We're Not Gonna Take It" and "See Me Feel Me/Listening To You".) CD 2 is mostly Pete's demos for TOMMY, and a few odd outtakes. The super deluxe is missing most of the outtakes found on the deluxe edition. Guess you still need the regular deluxe edition from a few years back. CD 3 is TOMMY as played live by The Who in 1969, pieced together from various concerts from tapes that Pete Townshend told Bob Pridden to burn. Bob didn't burn them after all. Although we have a few live TOMMY recording from The Who, this one is wonderful. DISC 4 is a Blue Ray disc of the original album in 5.1 surround. I haven't played it yet!!
This has been a magical November for fans of the three primary colours of English Rock ' Roll. The Rolling Stones "Sweet Summer Sun (Live At Hyde Park)" 2 CD/ 1 DVD release is a lot of fun. These oldies can still rock with the best of them. Then there's The Who's super deluxe "Tommy", and of course, our Beatles with "On Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2". YEAH!!!
