It is most unfortunate to have to report that upon further scrutiny, the harmonica solo on Thank U Girl is out of tune. Acc to Lewisohn, the track was recorded the same day as From Me To U---- which also contains an out of tune harmonica. I think i had prev described TUG as in tune but this is incorrect. A close comparison with the In tune harmonica on Pls Pls me should make this evident.

Rock 'n' roll harmonica is meant to be out of tune surely. I accept that it was quite important for Jacqueline du Pre's cello to be in tune, but Little Walter's harmonica?!

I knew there was a reason why i don't like Little Walter.
If R & R harmonica is suppose to be out of tune then why is Pls Pls Me In tune?

I'd answer that but I can't get over the notion of not liking Little Walter. John Lennon would have 'had words' circa 1960.

Those are two distinctly different styles of playing - Lennon (as Ranger pointed out) played a bluesy harmonica solo on Thank You Girl, whereas Please Please Me was pop, i.e. more akin to Delbert McLinton's playing on Hey Baby. It is not out of tune - to achieve that bluesy feel, it has to be played this way.

I seem to recall that D McClinton( like Julian) uses a chromatic on Hey Baby--- maybe i am wrong. I don't necessarily agree that the Pls Pls Me solo is not bluesy. I kind of look at all harmonicas as blues. It certainly is not a mainstream Jazz or R&R instrument. With the exception of I'M A Loser, i can't recall where it is ever used again.
There is no reason blues( or anything else) should be out of tune.
I have discovered something else in the last few yrs.
Big name jazz musicians like C Parker, Coltrane, D Gillespie, M Ferguson M Davis, S Rollins etc cannot even play their instruments in tune--- they're just a bunch of hacks. I think John made a quite derogatory statement about the music at one time and he was right.

Wow! That's brilliant!!!
Every now and then I come on this site and (slightly) wind up one or two people with (slightly) outlandish statements, but I'll never ever be able to compete with that casual dismissal of the core seam of cutting edge, innovative jazz from the middle of the 20th Century!!!!!
You've unearthed a form a genius there, roscoe, but I suggest you should stick to classical recitals at the Queen Elizabeth Hall!
Leave the blues and jazz to them nasty black men, like Miles Davis and John Coltrane, who can't even tune their instruments.

From Me To U was recorded the same day as TUG. Notice how the 1st harmonica solo is( like TUG) out of tune but the overdub at the end is( like Pls Pls Me) In tune. I am just wondering--- is the mid solo suppose to be blues while the ending is pop?

No, it has to do with "feel" - musical creativity isn't an exact science.

I think I understand. (Long pause) Nope, I don't understand. (Erm.....) I think.....I like rock 'n' roll the way.....Lennon and McCartney liked rock 'n' roll.
People who don't like Little Walter etc., must be people who missed the 60s, yeah? Beatles website? Consider me confused.

I'm so confused that I was confused about the positive energy (maybe?) from the previous threads, and might have answered with a more than negative thread than was necessary. I need a holiday!

Correct guys. You know back in the '60's when Dylan started out almost every folk singer used one. The blues guys used them first I guess in the 30's. They had no money and they were a cheap way of making music.I remember little Stevie Wonder using one too. Geez I wonder when the last time he was called 'Little'? lol Was Rocky Raccoon the last time John used a harmonica?

I can't recall a harmonica on Rocky but but haven't listened to that turkey in yrs--- good riddance. The last one i remember is ISHKB. I think that one is in tune. The harmonica is just a toy really. What is amazing is John being able to play it in tune at all.

John had a true musician's soul and passions. If he had taken interest in the cello instead of guitar,he might well have wound up in the LSO.
