I'm sure I'm not the only one who has the Stripped Down "Double Fantasy" album. What are your thoughts on it?
The original DF and "Milk And Honey" were the two Lennon albums I very rarely listened to. Musically, I wasn't really following Beatles/ex-Beatles at the time. The last Lennon album I listened to in depth (at the time) was "Walls And Bridges". I've only recently acquired "Milk And Honey" for the first time with the 2010 remaster, and "Double Fantasy" Stripped Down is my first Double Fantasy purchase.
My opinion is that the Stripped Down version is more enjoyable, while the original album is more commercial sounding with its' super-slick production.
Actually, in a way I like them both, but the Stripped Down version eclipses the original slightly.
I'm writing about the John tracks, of course.
In Yoko's defense, her songs on DF are NOT AWFUL. Not that that's a huge compliment, but "she must've learned something in all those years". Some of her lyrics are surprisingly thought provoking...and "I'm Your Angel" is a great send up of a 1920's tune. I still feel compelled to skip her tracks...
Any thoughts on this?

I agree about the over-slickness of the original production. I like a more natural sound most of the time. I also agree about the Yoko songs but at the same time I also own and occasionally play her first three albums. POB, Fly and Approximately Infinite Universe.
Over all, though, I have to say that John's solo/semi-solo career is a bit anti-climactic, no? (GASP! How dare you! That's St. John yer talkin' about, jerk!)

Overall, song for song, on balance - whatever - John has the better songs though. Even with Paul's 30 years as a solo artist, Lennons 6 years easily stacks up against McCartney's years and has more peaks in individual songs. Forget Wings, Plastic Ono Band these are just names for their solo years. Without doubt Lennon had his troughs with Mind Games being one of them.

I actually liked Mind Games, it was probably where and what I was doing at the time. And I always sided with John in the McCartney feud they had. I always liked John's thought provoking songs rather than Sir Paul's silly love songs. As for the original thread, the stripped down DF, I didn't even know there was a stripped down record out! lol

The idea was to strip back the late '70's production a bit and remove some of the overdubs and have the basic body of the song. And the album cover looks like a photocopy of the regular album.

What's 'Band On The Run' about? I dunno! The lyrics are a bit silly actually but the music is killer. Paul's lyrical peak was the whole RAM album.

I think the track Mind Games is one of John`s finest . Ram is a treasure Macca threw caution to the wind and just did an album that has a big finger to the music press and a Mr Lennon . D.F. Stripped Down . I don`t have it .

If the boss decides to get that huge George file out of the dropbox (if everybody has it downloaded now), I could slide D.F. Stripped Down in there.

I'd imagine that anything that got rid of the awfulness of the production on a 1980's record (pretty much any 1980's record) could only improve it.
