I've been having a Beatles session today and this song is, in my opinion an early gem from the Boys. It's from 'The Beatles Live At The BBC' sessions and it just shows how accomplished they were as live performers back then. Recorded in 1963 it's a typical Lennon & McCartney song (although influenced by Buddy Holly) which I believe was written in 1961. The lyrics maybe are a little twee (rhyming 'June Light' with 'Moonlight') but I love this song. I thought I'd share it with you :

It's always been one of my favorites. I first heard it on a bootleg in the early 80's. The Beatles - Silver Lining. A hodge-podge collection of live and studio and interviews all in lo-fi sound.

Yeah that was one of the Lennon/McCartney giveaways. Songs they wrote and gave to other artists in the Epstein stable to record. Here's the original done by Billy J. Kramer.

I remember first hearing this track during the Beatles at the Beeb radio broadcast in the late Seventies - anyone else remember that? Always thought it was a brilliant song (aside from moonlight and Junelight of course!).
Not a bad B side for Billy J Kramer either and the A side of that was another McCartney/Lennon track - the fast version of Do You Want To Know A Secret!!

The Billy J Kramer version of 'I'll Be On My Way' is slightly up tempo too! It also has a more Buddy Holly feel to it than The Beatles version. That was the difference though. The Beatles were obviously influenced by people such as Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and even Bob Dylan ('You've Got To Hide Your Love Away'). But they never sounded like a direct replica of their influences. So many bands, certainly in the Sixties sounded like tribute bands to those they had been influenced by.

I can't remember which bootleg album I first heard this on. I has no idea that it was a BBC session. I assumed it was an outtake from the "Please Please Me" album. The moonlight/june light lyric didn't bother me; in fact, it was perfect for this early simple song.
It remains one of my favorites, even though it's a little bit corny.
