OK, so Andy White is convinced he played drums on the officially released version of Please Please Me and has stated this in a TV interview. Is this....
A) the ramblings of a mad Scotsman B) one of the best kept secrets in Beatles history that is in fact true
My personal view is that it seems implausible that this has not come out before given the meticulous indexing of Abbey Road session tapes. Mark Lewisohn has gone through every session tape for his Recording Sessions book. I can't imagine he would miss this on a tape box especially given the historical interest on these first sessions as to who the personnel were.
In fairness to White, he says he can recognise his playing on the release and as a musician you would recognise your own playing on any recording.
Recording technology at the time would make it impossible for White's drum track to be lifted from an early take of Please Please Me, perhaps done on the Love Me Do session he was originally hired for, to then be used on a later recording of the song.
Was he later re-hired for another session to do the song and his presence at the session shrouded in secrecy?
Come on forum. Is this at all conceivable? What's your thoughts?

I think it is conceivable that he maybe did play on an early version or rehearsal of the Beatles first number one (YES IT WAS, GUINNESS!!!), but to my ears the drumming sounds uniquely Ringo, especially during the "come on, come on" sections.
Although tapes have gone missing of early sessions, the documentation from those sessions is still intact (good old EMI bureaucracy!). Plus, I'm pretty sure Andy White's session fees were published in one of Lewisohn's books, which showed the dates he was used.
So in my opinion, it's Ringo.

Maybe they played PPM as a warm up rehearsal, probably not recorded? I thought AW's role was strictly to drum on "Love Me Do" & "P.S. I Love You". I think Andy's memory is playing tricks on him.

I think to remember that White played in a version of "Please, please me" in september but it was the slower version, George Martin asked John and Paul to increase the tempo and also to work on some better, tighter harmonies, wich they did and recorded with Ringo on drums in november.

Hi Swadders and welcome to the forum! Yes but Andy White has also claimed he played on Please Please Me as well. Not that I believe it but he said it.

Mmm. What about this? It could be the first take of PPM that Andy plays drums on, not on the officially released version.
"Please Please Me was first brought to The Beatles' 4 September 1962 session, in which they worked on Love Me Do. They played Please Please Me during a studio rehearsal overseen by EMI's Ron Richards, but didn't formally record it.
On my first visit in September we just ran through some tracks for George Martin. We even did Please Please Me. I remember that, because while we were recording it I was playing the bass drum with a maraca in one hand and a tambourine in the other.

Yes, this is probably the likely cause for Andy White's thinking although I seem to remember from that BBC documentary you posted the link on that he implies he's on the single.
Anyway Bobber, nice to have you back on the forum!

I got out my trusty copy of Lewisohn's 'Beatles Recording Sessions' and on Sept. 11,1962, The Beatles did a take of Please Please Me. And as been reported Ringo did not play drums that day on any of the songs. That take was never used and never saved. This is probably the take Andy is talking about.

Hi Swadders and welcome to the forum! Yes but Andy White has also claimed he played on Please Please Me as well. Not that I believe it but he said it. Thankyou! I stand corrected! Always thought it was just Love Me Do he was hired to play on and Pete Best played on the anthology version of Please Please Me. Didn't realise there was an Andy White version!
