Verse 1: "The world is ... a bad place ... a sad place ... a terrible place ..." Chorus: "All my sorrow ..." Anyone remember this from the late 60s on AM radio? It really made an impression on my young ears then, and in retrospect I think it sounded very Beatley. I'm thinking I remember a lead guitar solo that sounded pretty much like our George wrote it and played it. Great tune (I think!)

Hi Alexis. The song you're referring to is called 'Reflections Of My Life' and Marmalade had a hit with it in early 1970 so your recollection of hearing it on the radio in late sixties is spot on. The harmonies in this song are tremendous and the words are very, very poignant. I was in my 'prime' ( around that time but I think anyone with a modicum of musical taste can relate to the song and it's message. It's nostalgic and the song itself in some ways is about nostalgia. I take your point though about the guitar solo being very 'George'. I always remember it as being deliberately 'stilted' (that's the only word I can find to describe it) but it's a lovely solo. To me, the bass makes the song and dare I say it, sounds something like our Paul would do on some of The Beatles later songs. I tell you what, Alexis, why don't we have a listen to it and 'reflect' (no pun intended!) and then find out what other people think about it. Good shout by the way. Yeah great track - nice bit of backwards guitar thrown in for good measure! The subject matter and sentiment reminds me of The Kinks' "Young And Innocent Days". For me, The Kinks song gained a lot more poignancy when I turned 40 - brings a tear to the eye now!
Have a listen!

Thanks, guys, you are awesome!! What a great song this really was! And, oh my gosh ... how Beatley can a song be (no higher praise in my book)! I agree, Arthur Lee, about Paul playing the bass on this one, just about to the T. Even the drums are Ringo, esp. in the guitar solo ... OK, help me out here please ... does the song through the 1st three chords - ESPECIALLY the 3rd chord - just scream "A Day in the Life"? Or am I just confused? P.S. BTW The End ... I couldn't get the Kink's song to play, the "Q" had a question mark in it, and there was no URL associated with it at my end, sorry ... love to hear it if possible, I'll try when I get home (maybe work filtering, etc.). Thanks

Well, Alexis - this is quite amazing. I've heard both songs many times before but I've never knowingly linked the two intros as being similar. I guess somewhere in my subconscious there's that strange feeling of similarity but until now hadn't even give it a thought.
Anyway, I've been 'experimenting' and what I've done is play the intro to 'A Day In The Life' followed immediately by "that 3rd chord" from the intro of 'Reflections Of My Life'.
Here it is and I think it's quite remarkable - both in the same key too. I call it ' A Day In The (Reflections Of My) Life'

Just checked, the bandwidth was exceeded - I have now uploaded it elsewhere so if you page back up to my post, you should now be able to listen to it

I think you have a fave rave mashup in the making there! I'll have to find out more about Marmalade. I think I remember hearing they were from Scotland. No other hits? Not what I would have predicted based on how good this song is musically, not to mention how deep and insightful the lyrics are. Maybe the muse just hit them once, and except for "Reflections ..." all they could do was bad covers of "Louie Louie" and "Wild Thing". Hey, nothing wrong with that, to have touched the flame once is more than many people get to do ... Have to see who produced them too. Hmm, never heard of him, some chap named Morge Gartin

No, they're a good band actually - forget their cover version of "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da"!
Here's another by them - now this is class!!

The Marmalade. A few useless facts and speculative fun. Marmalade can be made from Apples. The Marmalade released "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" as a single before the White Album was released. The whole Paul is dead thing with William Campbell of Scotland. The left handed musician in The Marmalade is named William Campbell, is from Scotland, quit the band when the Beatles broke up, resembles Paul. It is rumored Billy went on the study music and write scores for television. Personally, I have not heard of him since 1970 or so. Just posted for a laugh.

Thanks! I always loved all the stuff people came up with about the "Paul is Dead" period. I thought up a few of my own.

I made a section for all the "Paul Is Dead" stuff - of course I don't believe it, but it is fascinating nevertheless
