How much has the Stereo Master 2009 improved this song? My older CD version I had to turn it up to hear it, not now!
This is now one of my Beatles favourite songs :
Things I love about it: 1. Love the way George manages to get his (acoustic?) guitar to sound like a sitar (in places). 2. George vocal is so beautiful 3. Ringos drumming is exceptional. Pure Ringo I think. Some of the fills remind me of 'Free As A Bird' drum fills... Infact it is really 'the threetles' on here, as Lennon is nowhere to be seen. I think there is a Lennon influence though. The tone-vibe of this song reminds me of 'Across the universe'... 4. The experimental ending works on this. So many examples of this kind of stuff on the white album. 5. Listening to the Bass it's fairly steady. I think McCartney provided the organ on this as well. Not sure if that is him on backing vocal...more likely George double tracked. If you listen closely it's kinda like George is doing his best MacCartney backing vocal impression. Same happens on Johns Cry Baby Cry, for years i thought the last verse was a Macca backing vocal , but closer listening reveals Lennon double track impersonating a MaCartney backing vocal ...
Anyway great song this.........what do people think?

That's an interesting song to ask for opinions about. I first heard it on vinyl. The only track that I had a problem with, volume-wise, was "Julia". NOW I can hear it. According to EMI's notes of the session, the working title was "It's Been A Long Long Long Time". The title itself was too long. The White album hit me at a very impressionable age and "Long..." was an unusual stand out for me. The delicate melody countered by the almost brutally intrusive drum fills was like a revelation to me. Sort of beauty and the beast. A gorgeous "love" song with a menacing undertone. One of my faves to listen to loud. The "sitar" bit? I agree. I realised that it was; the action on the guitar was set a bit low. The end: a bottle of wine was sitting on the leslie cab and when Paul hit a certain low note on the organ, the bottle would vibrate. So they decided to throw the happy accident in and Ringo did his bit and George did his "ghost" sound and there you are... John didn't bother showing up for (I think) three of George's songs because he had a new infatuation thing going with some Japanese artist chick. John didn't show up for George's ABBEY ROAD songs because he was recovering from the Scotland car accident, caused when Yoko suggested that John 'be a man' and drive the bloody car on their trip. Give us a kiss!

Thanks for the response.
I am listening to The Beatles songs now near 30 years and I have to say that the most lasting ones that I repeatedly listen to are georges songs. Even 'while my guitar' is only my 3rd fav Harrison song on the white album, and even then i prefer the solo acoustic version.
My all time fav beatle songs are probably (going by these are the Beatles songs I now play the most) : 1. Get Back 2. Within You Without You (this song just kept getting better and better over the years. It's only really now that I understand they lyrics. As a teenager there is no way to understand them. Infact I feel the lyrics on that are way, way ahead of there time. 3. Old Brown Shoe 4. The Ballad of John and Yoko 5. Long Long Long 6. Savoy Truffle 7. Across The Universe 8. A Day In The Life 9. Helter Skelter 10. Free As A Bird

I can certainly go on at length about all this.
Helter Skelter and Revolution 9 are the songs that had the biggest impact on me as far as what could be classified as music goes.
Do you find the '09 remaster of Savoy Truffle was vastly superior to the old master? It sounded like it was being mixed at the last moment as they were putting it on the master reel. It started off at a lower volume. But the remaster FINALLY corrected that volume discrepancy and now, Savoy Truffle starts with the impact it always should've. A tiny bit of compression goes a long way.
Of the lesser known songs, I'm very fond of Old Brown Shoe. Nice (but rather short) ripping guitar solo from George. Unusual chords too.
Two more of my favorite songs was the single "I Feel Fine"/"She's A Woman". But it has to be the American Dave Dexter Jr. version on Beatles '65. The one that sounds like it was recorded in an empty warehouse. Imagine my shock when I finally heard the proper UK version in '87. 'Where was all the reverb'?
Here's some more of the "lesser known" songs that appeal to me. Not A Second Time (definitely not based on rock and roll) It's All Too Much (One chord songs appeal to me) Happiness Is A warm Gun (even today, kind of vicious sounding) I Want You [She's So Heavy] (One of the first 'doom metal' riffs) Dig A Pony I've Got A Feeling (the ragged glory of these tunes is so comfortable feeling [on Spector's album])
That's off the top of my head.
A Day In The Life is pure art!
I kind of wish that The Beatles agreed to record John's "Cold Turkey". That one could've worked on Abbey Road.

Long Long Long is a great song . George is very underated and round about the white album he must have started to believe that he was a great song writer and as we know most of his songs ended on All Things Must Pass. Another tune I love of George`s is It`s Only A Northern Song

I have always loved Long, Long, Long. I love that no matter how loud I want it to get, it stays in a distance.

Thanks Amadeus for noticing the vol prob with Savoy Truffle. If one listens closely, it has Not been solved with the'09, but never fear as it Has been corrected with the Roscoe Remasters which final vol is now complete. Actually Martha has a worse vol prob and that has been solved as well. An update to the Roscoe Remasters topic will be posted in a few days.
