He died 10 months before the 60s started, but in a way he was a 60s artist, because previously unreleased Buddy Holly material was still making the charts in the early 60s.

The Beatles played a lot of Holly's material in the early days of course. Not just the ones they recorded later.

I absolutely cannot stand True Love Ways! I think it's the only track of Buddy's that I don't like. I dislike it for the same reasons I dislike The Long And Winding Road by The Beatles - to my ears it's a boring dirge. The sort of music you hear on old-fart-radio on a Sunday afternoon! Those are definately two songs from the same category... But I like them. I have a high tolerance for cheese.

I checked Mark Lewisohns list on Buddy Holly songs by The Beatles. They played: Baby I Don't Care (also performed by Elvis Presley) Crying, Waiting, Hoping (on the Decca Tapes and (I think) on the BBC as well Everyday It's So Easy Mailman Bring Me No More Blues Maybe Baby Midnight Shift Peggy Sue Raining In My Heart Reminiscing Think It Over Words Of Love

The list is in the back of the Chronology. This is the stuff they played live, but the funny thing is that it counts back to 1957... So that was the Quarrymen period. I'll check again to see if Lewisohn forgot, or that I did!

There is also a recording of Reminiscing performed at the Star Club (another George vocal). They also recorded " Don't Ever Change" by The Crickets (without Buddy Holly). As far as I can tell, it's one of the few songs where George is singing a duet with Paul ... even after a zillion listens, I'm not entirely sure it's NOT John, but I'm pretty sure ... What do you guys think (BBC version)? Thanks! P.S. It's one of my favorite Beatles recordings!

Two great acoustic songs from Buddy Holly - after he died, these recordings were overdubbed and completed by Norman Petty (sound familiar?!). But, for me, these acoustic demos, recorded in Buddy's New York apartment, are the best versions.

I love that acoustic version of Peggy Sue Got Married, it is so much better than the one that Norman Petty released. I first heard it in the opening credits of the film of the same name (which starred Kathleen Turner and Nicholas Cage).

Of course John Lennon once said " Buddy Holly made it cool to where glasses and be a rocker" Or something like that.
