A fascinating story - nice one! What's interesting is that Billy Fury recognised The Beatles' talent when they were not highly regarded by other bands at that time.

I have never seen that (or any) picture of Derry and the Seniors before. Their saxophone player was Howie Casey, who toured with Wings later.

Awesome post, thank you so much Blue Meanie!
I wonder what Derry and the Seniors, and the other ones sounded like, it would be so cool to hear what Billy Fury and Larry Parnes heard that day. What was it that JPG&S had then, even with a robo-drummer, that the others didn't?
I also wonder, was this really all there was to the Liverpool pop scene in May, 1960? Did the Beatles get into the audition because they were one of the best Liverpool had to offer, or did they make it on the stage by force of will (read ... John).
John was such a cool guy, their biggest chance ever, and he was ready to turn it down out of friendship for Stu. That's loyalty.
BTW. where is the text from?
P.S. Welcome back Michelle Revolution, I was worried about you!

Those auditions they had back then reminds me of American Idol in a way...they only pick out the best ones and then the other groups have to go somewhere else to perform if they are not good enough.

Those auditions they had back then reminds me of American Idol in a way. Yeah, except the auditionees are not ritually humiliated by talentless millionaires.

Awesome pics and story. Where do you find this stuff?
I love the John quote. "We're a group, all or none. That's the way it is."
