Oh ! a debate , even though its futile . Your spot on Mr Musty about Page , as much as I think Zepp are the greatest Rock band there is and ever will be Hendrix is just so much of a genius on guitar and probably plays the guitar with his teeth better than half of the pretenders . Which brings me to D.T`s comments . Randy Rhodes is`nt even worthy to be mention on the same page as Hendrix , Page ,Townsend ,Beck, Bonamassa or even Clappers ! As for the other bloke ? As for riffs are you forgetting the first 8 years of Black Sabbath with a certain Toni Iommi who practically did everything in that space of time that is it`s worth of Heavy Metal erm Riffs He did it all ! Every Metal guitarist since then have tried to emulate the man. Everything that Ozzy did after Sabbath is dire , drab and not even worthy of a Black Sabbath b side . Ozzy`s always seems to end up back in Black Sabbath , never was that going to end up the other way round was it Townsend and Clapton sat and watched Hendrix and on that very night thought there careers were over . I know it`s a bit tongue in cheek on there part but Hendrix was that good . You may well think that the Metal stuff that came along in the 80`s is the best Music and fair enough . But ask any of those musicians who was or is there influence and I reckon 99.9. percent will say Hendrix I think its time to listen to the Man and not just the teeth playing Videos on You Tube . A Poll ? No need . Sit back and turn this up to 11. No overdubs on that track it`s just one man . I say man . As for Clapton . He was bloody brilliant up until he left Cream , ran off with his best friends wife and started to sell out and take lots of drugs and ended up doing covers . For me Clapton died the day he left Cream . These are just my opinions . But good ones . I don`t play guitar , but then again I don`t play professional football but I know a good player when I see one .

Shall we have a poll? Just with those three guitarists in and see how it turns out? Sure, but I don't doubt that Hendrix will win. (Unfortunately... )

Randy Rhodes is`nt even worthy to be mention on the same page as Hendrix , Page ,Townsend ,Beck, Bonamassa or even Clappers ! As for the other bloke ? Well, just listen to "Crazy Train" or "Mr. Crowley". Great solos, great riffs. As for Dimebag Darrell, "Cowboys From Hell" and "Cemetery Gates" sum up his career quite well. I like Tony Iommi too, in fact, I think he's awesome. However, Randy Rhoads is much better. Dire... drab... not even worthy of a Black Sabbath B-side?! I beg to differ! I love Black Sabbath, but I think that Ozzy just went up when he embarked on his solo career. "Crazy Train", "Diary of a Madman", "Mr. Crowley" – that's some good stuff! Well, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin are my favorite artists, so technically I wouldn't say that metal is the very best. I don't doubt that; I'm just not a big fan of him. I think of Clapton like I think of Hendrix: overrated. Same with me, Mr Kite.

This does beg the question amongst The Beatles who was the best guitarist.

I'll put it this way: If you are a bedroom guitarist like me, you'll find that it's easier to play Paul and John's guitar solos that George's. I have to agree 100% with mrmustard here.

So why does George not get the credit other have. I don't think John and Paul do get more credit over George for their guitar playing. Quite rightly Paul is a highly influential bass player. Paul has nailed a couple of great solos but this hardly forms the basis of a body of work like George's - and that's just with The Beatles. People confuse the fact that a great guitarist is great because they play very fast guitar solos with a million notes in. Well that's one way to play but George played differently. Every note mattered, was considered and thought through. It always had to compliment the piece of music he was playing to. I think the people that know really do KNOW how great he was. In his way he is of the same calibre as Clapton, Hendrix, Townshend, Jeff Beck etc Some would say better, others may not. One thing is for certain though, he's a million miles better than Dimebag Darrell!!

Mr Kite - just to elaborate about the night Clapton and Townshend watched Hendrix (I'm sure you've heard it).
Allegedly they where holding on to each other as they watched (not in a gay way!). Brian Jones was also present that night. I can't remember who he said it to but on the way out he bumped into someone and said (something like) 'watch you don't slip by the stage'
'Why?'
'Because its full of the tears of every guitar player realising their careers are over!'
Anyone feel free to correct my quote here. It was just out me 'ead like!

I have listened to Crazy Train and Crowley when they came out . Did`nt like them then , don`t like them now .
People who try and tell me Solo Ozzy albums are great albums always go "Well they have great tracks like Crazy and Crowley " If they are the best , well God no I have listened to them (last time the 90`s I think ) and they just reminded me of the time I listened to a Meat Loaf album . Yeh , they are that bad .
Same here Mr Musty ,it`s all a bit blurry now of the exact quotes from Clappers and Pete I know it`s on the Hendrix Doc that I used to watch at least once a week back in the day But I do have the last time they updated on DVD so I shall dig it out .
Exhibit . The Irony of the title ?!
Drab .
Best Beatle guitarist . George Harrison .

People who try and tell me Solo Ozzy albums are great albums always go "Well they have great tracks like Crazy and Crowley " If they are the best , well God no There are the best, but any other solo Ozzy ("No More Tears", "Mama I'm Comin' Home", "Perry Mason", "My Jekyll Doesn't Hide", "Road To Nowhere", "Fire In The Sky", "Diary of a Madman", "I Don't Know", "Over the Mountain", etc., etc.) is also good. Alright; but what's so bad about Meat Loaf? You forget that Ozzy also likes rock and roll. Heck, he even follows Paul McCartney and The Beatles on Twitter! Also, "You Can't Kill Rock 'n' Roll" is a good song!

What`s wrong with Meat Loaf ?!!! Jeez , we will be bringing up Kiss next . Got to say, I can't stand Meatloaf. I mean they are all great musicians in the band but it's like listening/watching a West End theatre production for every single song they do. It's so overblown. They would have gone down well in British variety shows in the 70's. Like guests on the Little and Large show etc. I know this is was a period of his early career, in Broadway etc, but for me it doesn't translate to serious music let alone rock.

Amadeus - I'm a guitar player too! So is the guy from Spandau Ballet. Oh, and him from Right Said Fred is a guitar player too!. But Clapton - you think he's 'just' a guitar player. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Take a look at this guy. So, what do you think Wolfgang? Is he a guitar player? (It's difficult to argue against that one). Or is he 'just' a guitar player? Mind you, Knopfler did have a hand in producing a lot of Dire Straits albums and also his own solo stuff output. Does this mean he's a 'better' guitarist than SRV and/or Clapton? [/p]
[/quote] You forgot Chet Atkins. It does all come down to taste in the end. Otherwise there wouldn't be so many of them with different approaches and styles. I sort of always considered Knopfler as being Dire Straits along with some 'other guys'. Um,,, I'm not a fan of Clapton. My personal taste doesn't allow me to get through one of his solo albums. Does that mean he's bad? Not at all. A Guitar playing friend of mine swears by him. But I can't see any inspiration or greater vision in his stuff. SRV? Not a fan. In my taste parameters, he just sounds like a cleaned up Hendrix blues cover guy. He doesn't hit any wrong notes. But in my music palette, limiting yourself to JUST the blues (or any other kind of music) is very limiting in the appeal to me. But I have another friend who virtually has a shrine in his innermost room to him! Here's a random list of guitarists and my personal thoughts on them. Jimmy Page - If all I had to go on was the live stuff, I'd get tired of it after a while. But because of his artistry over each one of those albums, I consider him a great artist. Steve Howe - My favorite. jack of ALL styles, Master of none. David Gilmour - He plays just one note per hour but each of those damn notes soars like,,,,,, SRV - Note perfect hard rock blues player. Guess I'm not a blues fan. Eric Clapton - Now if he had played with Pink Floyd (which he sort of did in '84 on Roger Waters album) I'd like him better Mark Knopfler - I can't get over how he pretty much never uses a pick. Damn startling. Dimebag Darrel - Great for his style of music but I don't like that style. Jeff Beck - He covered so many styles over his career. He always sounds like Jeff Beck but on different styles of music, I can follow him. I really like Blow By Blow. John McLaughlin - Every now and then I need a jazz/hard rock fusion shredfest. Randy Rhoads - Again. Great for his style but my tastes tells me that Ozzy was the beginning of '80's hair metal and the only reason I liked his live album 'Speak Of The Devil' was because of all the Sabbath covers. Pete Townshend - Meh. BUTT in the context of The Who and those songs he wrote for them; absolutely brilliant. Especially visually in the old footage. Chet Atkins - Such a cool, tricky style of playing and damn happy and cheerful. Lightnin' Hopkins - 'I got a mojo handdd,,,' I like a lot of those mainly solo blues guys just hammering out a one man band set of pure hurtin' George Harrison - Calculated player. Every note though out and played carefully. Outstanding solos for me: 'And I Love Her' and 'Old Brown Shoe' Paul McCartney - A bit showoffy and sometimes a bit cheeky sounding. Sometimes great, sometimes not. Cheeky: Another Girl. Showoffy but great: Taxman and Goodmorning Goodmorning. John Lennon - Such a delightfully hamfisted player with little finesse. Outstanding solos for me: Slow Down, You Can't Do That and his bits in The End. Oh yeah, his bass playing in Helter Skelter is deserving of mention. That was me backpedaling out of seemingly judgmental statement of who's better. Answer? No one. It comes down to what you like.
