No Beatles though. There's definitely a bit of rock in their back catalogue. I was never able to put Beatles songs on the same list as lesser mortals. Just didn't seem right. My list won't have any Beatles song. You ask me what my favorite rock songs are, it never would have occurred to me to include a Beatles song. Well, It's the bleedin', bloody Beatles innit! It would be blasphemous to put, say, Helter Skelter one below Smoke On The Water or Taxman next to All The Young Dudes. Oil and water. Just can't happen.

It's one of the reasons I don't do lists. The Beatles would always be at the top then the list only means something to me. Yeah, there's no way I could put Smoke On The Water above any Beatles song.

Well, in my list, I was thinking of greatest, and discarding personal favorites. Otherwise, you'd have seen a lot more Beatles songs at the top. (Not to mention Led Zep, Megadeth, Iron Maiden and the like).

What`s wrong with Smoke On The Water ?!
That`s the trouble with lists .
Lets take Stairway To Heaven for example Now this song must be in every best Rock list since 1971 . So then do you automatically put it in a list because of all the plaudits and critics say it`s that good ? After about 20 years of hearing you would think a lesser track of theirs would become a favorite Ten Years Gone for example , that track is probably my second choice for the fact I hav`nt over heard it like Stairway . But you got to go with your gut feeling and put what you really is worthy of your list . So is Stairway To Heaven worthy and one of the best Rock songs ever to grace a Turntable . OH Yes !

What does that even mean? The greatest rock songs. What's the definition of great? Janet Jackson is one of this year's nominees for the R&R hall of fame. I don't see any of hers in that 500 list.
I would say 'Sister Ray' from the Velvets is one of the greats but,,,,,,,,,,

It was Jimi Hendrix`s birthday last week . But I don`t think you need an excuse to play a Video of the man . I have a debate I would like to throw into the ring about Jimi . For me he is the man on the Guitar . But I don`t know anyone who has seen him live, was he as good as they say , better than Clappers or Page ? Was he overrated ? Would he still been the man if he had`nt died and left his "Legend " status intact Anyone have a thought on the man .

Well lessee,,,,,, There are loads of live albums out there to judge his live quality. More than a guitar player, he was an overall producer. He played guitar very imaginatively but also knew what he wanted to create from the outset. Those 3 albums are the vision of Jimi Hendrix. He didn't show up to play guitar on them. His signature is all over them.
Stevie Ray Vaughn is a guitar player. Jimi Hendrix is so much more.
Technically, Jimi's a pretty sloppy player but so is Jimmy Page. But Page's 'vision' went way beyond getting his guitar parts down. All those albums were produced by him.
Clapton? I don't know as much of his stuff but I think he's just a guitar player. Not like the Jimi/Jimmy show.

Hendrix is a legend. No one took guitar playing to that level until he arrived. Arguably he was already a legend before he left London for America.
For me he leaves Page miles behind as a live guitar player but then a lot of guitar players do. As an all out Rock guitar player I have always found Page's solos unfocused, uninspiring and just plain rambling going absolutely nowhere. Playing different stylings of guitar in the studio and putting everything together was where his strengths lay.
While I agree with Amadeus that Hendrix's style was 'sloppy' especially in comparison to the likes of Clapton and SRV, it was an inspired sloppiness. A genuine feel for inspired improvisation.
So, overrated? Definitely not. Deserved legendary status? Without question.

I myself am not such a big Hendrix fan. His music just doesn't SOUND as good. I agree that he's good, but I don't think he needs to end up #1 in every list. Randy Rhoads and Dimebag Darrell, however, were much better. They sounded better, and they played better.
The only reason that Hendrix pops up in my list at all is because he could play the guitar with his teeth, but other than that, I myself think he's overrated.

No, I'm dead serious! When I first heard of Hendrix, people were saying that he was best guitarist ever, but when I actually heard him, it was a big let-down. Hendrix did not blow my mind. The only reason I think he's actually pretty good is because he could play with his teeth. THAT is true skill. However, I still am not too big a fan of how it sounds.
There only two guitarists that actually blew my mind. The first was when I first heard Randy Rhoads's riff on "Crazy Train". I sat back and thought, "Wow, you can actually do that with a guitar?!" The second was when I heard "Cowboys From Hell". Dimebag Darrell's riff was unlike anything I ever heard. Hendrix may be good, but these two are, in my opinion, the greatest.

Shall we have a poll? Just with those three guitarists in and see how it turns out?

But Clapton - you think he's 'just' a guitar player. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Take a look at this guy. So, what do you think Wolfgang? Is he a guitar player? (It's difficult to argue against that one). Or is he 'just' a guitar player? Mind you, Knopfler did have a hand in producing a lot of Dire Straits albums and also his own solo stuff output. Does this mean he's a 'better' guitarist than SRV and/or Clapton?
