How do yo guys here feel about George's song My Sweet Lord. When I read about his song...I did not like the fact that George was sued for copying the Chiffon's song He's So Fine. To me he did not copy it...okay so there is a SLIGHT similiarity to the two songs but I still say George did not copy it. It still angers me that poor George had to go through all that. But I know George didn't let it bother him. I like how he wrote This Song to get back at them which was all harmless.

I don't think he consciously copied it. However, the similarities are considerable and I don't think you can deny that George must have heard He's So Fine. For example - I once spent a whole day working on a great song and was finishing up the lyrics when I suddenly realised I'd simply re-written Knocking On Heaven's Door! But I'm not famous - I didn't record it - and it didn't get to number one (for both of the previous reasons!). But I didn't deliberately copy it - it was obviously in my sub-conscious. And that's probably what happened to George - except it DID get to number one and he was incredibly famous!

I think as soon as Johnathon King started heavily publicising the similarities, George should have realised it, and immediately put a contingency plan together. A credit to the original composers of 'She's So Fine', and a cut of the royalties. Instead of fighting what was always going to be a losing battle, in court. I'm sorry, but he must have heard the similarities after he recorded it.

George did do exactly that. He put together a compensation package for Bright Tunes that they considered extremely fair and were about to accept-- until Allen Klein went in behind George's back and sabotaged the deal. Each time George and Bright Tunes came close to agreement, Allen would secretly queer the deal because he was PO'd about George dropping him as manager (this high-level summary and timeline is close enough for jazz). Eventually the deadline ran out and they had to go to court. That's how this case got so high profile. John and Paul settled their questionable cases out of court because they didn't have someone maliciously working on preventing a settlement.
And don't for a minute think this was about anything other than the money. There was no artistic protection involved because the composer, Ronnie Mack, was dead shortly after "He's So Fine" became a hit. Bright Tunes only went after George because MSL was a massive hit and he was filthy rich; Klein kept the case alive for the same motive. If you ask me, the really questionable part of all this was the judge's settlement. I think Klein paid him off under the table so Klein would break even on all his scheming, even though he ended up being exposed for his unethical behavior.
You can easily read up on the twists and turns of the case on the net. But it really irritates me how much grief George had to go through because his ex-manager was vengeful and greedy.

Now you mention it, I do remember the Klien thing. What a scheming little *ucker he was!

For example - I once spent a whole day working on a great song and was finishing up the lyrics when I suddenly realised I'd simply re-written Knocking On Heaven's Door! LOL. Thankfully, that hasn't started to happen to me yet. Most of my songs can be claimed to be 100% original, or heavily influenced by music which is in the public domain, thank goodness.

Yeah, thankfully it's only happened that one time - a tad annoying though!
