Yeah, I've heard a lot of good things about X-Ray - isn't it a sort of novelised biography - a character called Ray seen from Ray's perspective looking back? I dunno, I've confused myself now! LOL! yeah it's the unauthorised autobiography! noticed yesterday it seems to be out in paperback but different to the original paperback (the spine looked different) i'll bare that in mind as i'm 1yr 2wks off 30!

God Save the Kinks!
The Kinks are in my top 3 favorite bands. I can't think of another band that recorded the same quantity of great stuff. Not even the Fab Four.
Somebody should cover this masterpiece:

I appreciate they have done 20 odd albums but are you saying that every album is of better quality than The Beatles output? I would find this hard to believe but in all honesty I don't own any Kinks albums (although I keep saying to myself I will get the village green preservation society). I am therefore not really qualified to disagree with your statement but its the first time I have ever read a statement like this and indeed the latter Kinks albums put on such a pedestal. Would any other forum members who are Kinks fans agree with this?

Unfortunately there seems to be no stereo recordings of early Kinks.

Shel Talmy had a knack for awfully rough sounding mono mixes. I don't even think he knew about stereo. All that early WHO stuff and KINKS stuff was only in mono. I just wonder why it had to sound so distorted. Listen to the stereo mix from the '90s on the My Generation album and you can see the original multi-tracks were good. Maybe the KINKS multi-tracks could turn up and some stereo mixes could be done. At the same time, I should mention that those awful sounding mono mixes are as much apart of the art of those songs as the songs them selves. I admit that when I did first hear the new stereo of the WHO, it was a shock. Half the personality, it turn's out, resided in all the distortion. I always used to marvel at why The Beatles records sounded so clean and fresh and a bunch of their contemporaries, WHO, KINKS, The STONES, sounded SOOO rough. As far as the greatness of the KINKS goes, I'm a casual fan. I have the Best of and a few of the notable albums like ''Lola vs. Powerman'', ''Village Green...'', ''...Arthur'' and love them all. Now, I wonder cooter, if you would recommend the music hall era stuff. I like music hall anyway but are the albums solid quality? i.e.; Preservation 1&2.? But to say ANYTHING negative about the FABS,,,that's just heresy. Worth a turn or two on the rack.

I never got on with the post-60s/post Pye stuff, still don't. Actually I don't even like the 'Powerman' LP.
Like The Who, The Pretty Things, The Pink Floyd etc., the sharp stuff (coincidentally when the groups also LOOKED so good) was in the swinging decade.
One of their last Pye recordings is posted aboye ('The Way Love Used To Be' on 'Percy') and it shows the incredible depth of material the group had at their disposal.
Quite apart from the Kinks themselves circa '67-'69, Dave had a wonderful solo career, and Ray did a huge amount of original material for various BBC and film productions.
Quick question: Was a screenplay actually completed for the 'Arthur' Granada TV production?

in my humble opinion the only music group that can touch the beatles was the kinks.the kinks just didnt do greatness for as long as the beatles did.but the kinks late 60s albums are just as good as anything the beatles did.sadly ray davies writing was on the decline in the 70s.i am lucky to have met ray davies and got him to sign my kinks arthur cd cover.

'Imaginary Man' is a great little documentary about Ray Davies and the Kinks, it's well worth a watch!
