How do you explain the 'reality' of the well documented separation when John (albeit 'arranged') left Yoko for May Pang? The Ballard (sic) Of John & Yoko might well have been influenced by Ono but this was a very short period in his life. To say that 'Yoko is the 5th' is quite irresponsible. The Beatles were breaking up (and they knew it) during the 'Let It Be' sessions when Ono was patently affecting John's creativity. The Beatles wrote their best music when Ono wasn't around to 'influence' John. End of. Christ, you know it ain't easy.

I don't think there's any denying Yoko's influence but I don't think she could ever be considered a "fifth Beatle".

I agree with you Michelle. when yoko came into the picture there were hardly "The Beatles" (if you know what I mean) The Beatles wrote their best music when Ono wasn't around to 'influence' John. End of. True that

Fifth beatle surely is George Martin, although Mal Evans has been a fifth Beatle on an album cover and also in the magical mystery tour film!

Possibly the back of the Sgt Pepper LP? For many years the story was that it was Mal Evans with his back to the camera on the reverse of the sleeve, being called upon to stand in for Paul at a photo session Paul could not attend. However, alternative shots from the photo session show that it was in fact Paul not Mal with his back to the camera all along!

I'm with Michelle and kaleidoscope. Yoko was a huge influence on John, but mostly on his solo work. By the time she showed up, The Beatles were already falling apart. Strictly speaking, when the band took the name "The Beatles", there were five members: John, Paul, George, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Since they joined in that order, Pete Best is the fifth. Ringo would be the sixth Beatle. See my take on the full story of the band's prehistory at: www.beatles-invasion.com/the-beatles-prehistory/

Actually, wasn't Tommy Moore the drummer before Pete? Making him the 5th.

Tommy Moore left before they changed the name to The Beatles. Other pre-Beatles included: Pete Shotton (washboard), Rod Davis (banjo), Bill Smith (tea chest bass), Eric Griffiths (guitar), Colin Hanton (drums), Len Garry (tea chest bass), John Charles Lowe (piano), Les Stewart (bass), etc: Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarrymen

Only one gig, but without him, there may have never BEEN the Beatles ( beatleforum.proboards42.com/index.cgi?board=chat&action=display&thread=1202560569 ) Though I suspect John would have kept them trying again and again till it worked ...

George Martin, Brian Epstein, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall... for me, they are the only guys that could be considered the 5th Beatles although Preston for a short time was also in that select group. As for Yoko....

Watched a TV programme last night about the history of the Royal Variety Performances. To all intents and purposes, Jimmy Tarbuck was the 5th Beatle! He came from Liverpool and in the early sixties he sported the infamous 'Mop Top' hairstyle. So there you have it. That's what they said on the TV but I don't believe it Personally speaking, the only one who can claim to be the 5th Beatle is absolutely nobody. There were four of them. End of.

I suppose, technically, either Pete Best or Stuart Sutcliffe were jointly the 5th Beatles.

If the term '5th Beatle' means a member that actually made The Beatles who they where historically and in terms of popular culture then that title has to go to George Martin or Brian Epstein without whom we may not of even heard of The Beatles and this, and other forums, may not even exist. Certainly there would be no Beatleweek for us to be attending.

Yep, in the honorary sense of the word George Martin or Brian Epstein have to be pretty level pegging.
