Just back from my first trip to New York. I visited the memorial and was suprised just how many people were there. There were flowers, pictures of John and The Beatles, with buskers singing away. There was a guy who said he was the "Mayor of strawberry fields" and he gave a talk about John. The asmosphere was lovely and you could see a few people had a lump in the throat including me. I didn't realise how close the Dakota was to Central park. I believe John had the 7th floor. It must be a wonderful view. The building looked fantastic.

Well timed post for me,Lennon9091 as just last night on an American tv news network,I saw an hour long special about Lennon's killer(whose name I fully realize is near mortal sin to mention here). At the end, they had a bit about the 1985 dedication to Lennon at Central Park West. And,yes,Lennon resided right across the street from the world famous park and could quite often be seen strolling through.Have you by any chance ever seen the film of John and Yoko walking in a park just two weeks before his death and a fan stops them to ask for an autograph and when he asks when the Beatles are getting back together,John quips "tomorrow"?THAT was Central Park.A marvelous and quite essential memorial to a man who brought so much hope and insight into this world. The clips of all the millions and millions of fans around the world mourning his death in public ceremony ALWAYS brings a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat as it causes me to recall the shock, horror and grandiose grief I felt at the time when I was just eleven.Eleven.That's a hell of an age to be learning the life lesson I gathered from this horrific event. That lesson? My uncle once put it to me best when we were discussing Lennon's talent and fame and he said "they made him rich, they made him famous, and they made him dead..."Strawberry Fields Forever. And ever and ever and ever....

New York City is a great place, Manhattan in particular, and it’s understandable why John and Yoko would want to settle there. The place has a certain charisma that pulls you in. I believe NYC is a much better place now than it was when John was alive and am sorry that he is not around to enjoy it.
My wife and I have vacationed there twice in the past 6 years and had a great time. We visited Central Park both times (more recently on bicycles) and saw Strawberry Fields, very green, peaceful, well shaded, across the Central Park West (8th Avenue) from the Dakota. Central Park is a very beautiful place. It was totally landscaped (the 2007 tour bus guide used the word “fake,” which was not as good a choice of words as “landscaped).“
The 2012 tour bus guide said that Yoko owns the whole floor that she lives on. (Can't remember which floor.) He also stated that when John was alive, he would hold Sean up to the window to show him off to the tour busses below; but that he did not dangle him dangerously over the edge as Michael Jackson later did with baby Blanket.
I remember an interview with John where he told the interviewer that he wanted to live in NYC in a luxurious apartment overlooking Central Park where he could go out and eat in peace without people bothering him.
As a baseball fan, I remember Reggie Jackson telling an interviewer the same thing in 1977, that he signed with the NY Yankees that year so he could live where he could go out and eat and people would not bother him.
In 1981, Reggie “played out his option” with the Yankees, opting to leave the team following that season to play with the California Angels.
